The view of the mountains is beautiful and the history associated with this place. The Apollo bath museum, the statue of Hercules and the Casino are nice places to visit. It is worth taking a short trip to Orsova (18 km) and see the impressive sights of The boilers of the Danube and the sculpture of Decebalus -king of Dacians- carved in the mountain rock

The town itself doesn't offer much, except for the decadence...
The town itself doesn't offer much, except for the decadence of a glorious past. Which is quite touching, at least for me.
But the hiking trails around the town and the valley are amazing. This is actually the main attraction of the area, that worth every effort.

This is a hidden gem - or could be.
This is a hidden gem - or could be. The old town is absolutely beautiful and the setting is stunning. Sadly, not a lot of restoration has been completed yet - but it is happening. The city centre, which is about 5 minutes drive south of the spa town is over-priced and very shabby. This is not your upmarket tourist town whatsoever. However, the setting, between the mountains is spectacular and you can see the potential. The town suffers from poor sewerage treatment, the river is lined with plastic and construction rubbish, and the guide maps and signage are woefully inadequate. There is major work being done on the road through the town and mountains, and some great restoration happening in the spa town. I would love to return in a year or two to see the positive changes. This should be one of the most beautiful tourist spots in Europe.

We returned after 7 years. Still so much things to discover. This place is magic.hikes, caves, architecture, national parks, river george, waterfalls, termal pools all over along the river for free, no place like this. Also the architectural heritage, yes, there are enormous work left, but they are on it. The task is huge for a small town. Only the stray dogs and their shit all over the town and the garbage around the pools outside the city are disturbing.

Najlepši utisak vezan je za dolinu reke Čarne i okolne...
Najlepši utisak vezan je za dolinu reke Čarne i okolne planinske visove, koji zaista impozantno izgledaju. Priroda je uglavnom čista. Svuda je ve odlično obeleženo, tako da je lako pešačiti ili planinariti. U okolini banje nalaze se mesta sa vrlo interesantnim kućama, svako selo je spcifično po nečemu. Sasvim slučajno otkrili smo i Božji most, jedno od prirodnih čuda ovog kraja, u sred sela. Posetili smo i manastire i crkve u ovom kraju. Svi su jako interesantni, a posebno manastir Tismana u istoimenom mestu čiji je ktitor Nikodim Tismanski, srpski monah, koji je postao jako poštovan rumunski svetitelj. U gradiću Orsova ima lep manastir Svete Ane, koji treba videti.
Zgrade u centru banje su uglavnom oronule, jedan deo se renovira, a par njih je u funkciji, ali svi tragovi prošlosti govore da je ovo mesto nekada imalo zaista posebnu čar i lepotu.

The town is a strange mix of old and new, and the old is definitely the part worth seeing. One question we needed to answer was: how to try out the thermal waters without paying? The answer is to go to the Hotel Roman in the early morning, and bathe for free in the Cerna river just upstream from it - in the thermal springs and pools there. It's important to go early - in the tourist season at least - because it can get very crowded later, and there are not many places on the rocks to sit or dry your towel. Because it's free, there are no facilities, and no-one seems to clear up the litter. But all of that is made up for by the amazing, healing waters. We felt wonderful for 24 hours!

The room is good, normal, average. For cleanliness it's clean, for quietness it's quiet, the bed is comfortable, for warmth it was warm. But the quality of the bathroom for example was a bit lower, like it's an older hotel and they fix the bathtub as they can. The view was great because we got a room on the 9th floor so you could see up into the Cerna valley towards Domogled National Park. The spa was okay/good too.

Lovely location with your own peaceful bar /restaurant just by the water flowing through Baile Herculane, protected by the sun from the surrounding trees. Friendly staff and a tasty food. They have a little thermal pool too but we went for the free baths located next to the old Neptune SPA (A wonderful experience really).
