New Bern is a quintessential, historical, small Southern community. For anyone who enjoys learning about the nation's early days, this is a perfect spot! The guided tour of Governor Tryon's Palace, the local gardens, and the historical museum are worth your time. There are plenty of touristy shops for purchasing memorabilia to remember your trip. The restaurants served excellent food. Don't miss the pancakes with butter syrup at Baker's Kitchen. Be sure to order the Feta Dip at Persimmons while enjoying the outdoor patio. The Fried Green Tomatoes at The Chelsea are the best you will ever eat! Note: Many downtown New Bern restaurants are closed on Mondays; plan accordingly. You might want to practice parallel parking before you visit.

We like the harbor area atmosphere and the historic downtown...

We like the harbor area atmosphere and the historic downtown area. We were not pleased with the hotel, but could not cancel without loosing money. We will definitely return to New Bern. This was not our first visit there.

New Bern, North Carolina, was a charming historic city that...

New Bern, North Carolina, was a charming historic city that does not appear to be overrun with tourists. Downtown and nearby historic home district is walkable (I recommend staying in one of the many bed-and-breakfast homes close to downtown), and the walk along the river is lovely. Enjoy many shops and great restaurants. Take a river cruise, and just 45 minutes away is Atlantic Beach if you need an ocean fix.

New Bern is a great city for a quiet, weekend escape.

New Bern is a great city for a quiet, weekend escape. Tryon Palace and gardens are wonderful. The themed bears strategically placed throughout the town added to the enjoyment of the city. The historic district and harbor park were within walking distance of my hotel. Morehead City and Atlantic Beach are easily accessed by car for a fun afternoon escape. We ate at MJ's which had wonderful seafood and exceptional service. Our stay at Tryon Riverfront Inn could not have been better. If you are looking for a weekend filled with history, fun and food, New Bern is the place for you.

Tryon Palace was exceptional.

Tryon Palace was exceptional. You can spend half a day to a whole day with guided tour, touring the grounds, and visiting the museum. The birthplace of Pepsi is also a must see. Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant was a wonderful place to eat - great food and a beautiful view of the Neuse River. Recommend staying at the Hilton - Tryon Riverfront Inn for an unbeatable location and fabulous service.

Historic district worth visiting but is only a few blocks.

Historic district worth visiting but is only a few blocks. Driving further west, New Bern isn't much to look at except for some nice housing sections. Big plus is the river water activities. Good for all sorts of water outside fun. Beautiful setting in historic section, outskirts not so beautiful. Probably best to visit off winter season. Athens Theatre Improv show was very well done - talented cast. Highly recommend Civic Theatre performances.

Hanna House proved to be an ideal place for us to stopover on the trip down the east coast. The B&B was easy to find, parking was possible on the drive and it was a very short walk into town for an evening meal. The room was very comfortable and the choice of homemade breakfast options was amazing. Our picks were very tasty. We were able to leave our car at the B&B for a few hours so we could explore New Bern, before heading on our way.

The Bed&Breakfast was located in central New Bern and we loved the host and the outstanding breakfast. The host was so friendly and gave us recommandations for dinner. We were able to let our car at the building the next day, so we could walk around the town without looking for a parking space for our car. New Bern was a stopover on our way to the Outer Banks and was perfect for one night.

A great place to stay. Our expectations were exceeded! The historic inn is very well maintained. The innkeeper Linda is a lovely person. She prepares a fantastic breakfast, the best we ever had in the US! There is a pub next door. The location is perfect for exploring historic New Bern by step. If we return to New Bern we'll definitely stay in Meadows Inn.

The BridgePointe was a nice distance to the downtown area of New Bern and the facilities were what you’d expect for a hotel at this price point. However their staff was exceptional and went above and beyond to be helpful including ensuring my glasses I’d left behind made their way back to me. Thank you!
