He owned large pastoral properties and took particular pride in sheep breeding, even introducing improved Shropshire sheep to South Australia. Later in life he married Katharine “Kitty” Blue, a thoughtful and socially engaged woman who became a gracious hostess and an active supporter of charities and organisations for women and children in Adelaide.
