Small-scale bed and breakfasts are dotted all over the rural Meetjesland region. Nevertheless, there is always room for one more addition, especially for a place as charming and lovely as ‘The Day of the Lord’ in Merendree. Bart T’Hooft and Katleen De Decker have recently converted part of their rustic farmhouse into a guesthouse. They are proud to show us around one of the three spaces, a duplex in country house style, with a small balcony overlooking the glorious garden. “We purchased this estate in 1994, when it was still a working farm. After we had renovated the main house and converted the old pigsty into a studio, we decided to tackle the old barn. We removed the massive roof and added a thick layer of insulation.” Today, the barn boasts a cosy bar and a large meeting space. Everything was constructed from previously used materials and decorated with antiques. That is why just about everything on display is for sale in the antique shop. The garden used to be a meadow.
