The location is amazing, everything is close by, cafes, shops, restaurants. Very quite and beautiful, the area is so alive. The parking is on the opposite side if the entrance, across a pizza restaurant, not very clear at first we had to ask the reception desk. Great lounge area, they have a restaurant and a very modern dining area but I didn’t try them. Looking pretty good though.

I visited Ghent from 7–9 September and asked ChatGPT to recommend a hotel that would: (a) be right in the city centre and easy to navigate from to visit all the main sights; (b) be reputed for its hospitality, comfort, and service; and (c) help create a truly beautiful memory of my stay. It recommended 1898 The Post—and the choice couldn’t have been better. The hotel is housed in a grand historic building, formerly the Post Office, right in the heart of the city. The Lys River and the Graslei and Korenlei quays (lined with eateries) are directly behind the hotel. In front are the St Nicholas Church, St Bavo’s Cathedral, the Town Hall, and the Belfry—all just a short stroll away. To the left, a lively street is filled with restaurants and cafés. There’s also a taxi stand conveniently located at the riverside entrance. My room was spacious, with a big comfortable bed, a large window overlooking the street, and a loft-style bathroom. (Tip: travellers who find stairs difficult should request a room with bedroom and bathroom on the same level.) I was delighted to find a handwritten welcome card and a small box of pralines waiting for me when I checked in—such a thoughtful touch. Breakfast was served in a beautiful, cosy room, with a spread that was both generous and delicious. The staff throughout were warm, friendly, and attentive, ensuring that my stay was as comfortable as possible. I especially appreciated their care before I even arrived: shortly after my booking, they emailed to ask if I needed any special arrangements, and later followed up to alert me that I was arriving on Car-Free Sunday, providing helpful directions so my driver could drop me close to the hotel. I truly couldn’t have asked for more. Staying at 1898 The Post created a very special memory of my visit to Ghent, and I would certainly choose the same hotel again on a future visit.

An attractive town, with lovely buildings and welcoming people. Architecture mixes traditional Flemish with modern, and some wonderful art deco. When you walk along the streets, do look up at the tiles, brickwork and roof lines, as well as admiring the pretty planting and interesting statues at ground level. The huge town square is currently being dug up to incorporate more green areas, but when completed will be again a great centre to enjoy the wonderful buildings such as the Stadhuse with statues of Saint Nicholas and a balloon. Other places to see include the beautiful church topped with the gold madonna, the moated Castle Walburg and bandstand in a pretty park, and some of the town's museums: when we visited, some were being renovated or moved, but the Curiosum was a fabulous quirky collection of delights, and the SteM Zwijershoek housed a wonderful textile exhibition displaying an impressive collection of weaving and knitting machines and equipment testifying the importance of that trade in this town. Another great find was the collection of pipes and tobacco jars in the nearby Pijp and Tabacmuseum, but this has more limited opening hours. The town is clean, attractive, and has some good places to enjoy coffee and cake, or eat, plus an excellent pancake and ice cream shop.

The city is worth a visit: mediaeval church, city hall, begijnhof, market square, the works. The surrounding Vlaamse Ardennen are nice for hiking (and supposedly also for cycling). But if you want to visit the city hall and adjacent museum: pretty much everything is closed on a Monday. And restaurants often on Sun/Mon/Tue.

beautiful historic town ,very friendly people. parking was plentiful and once you got to grip with the language most directions were easy to follow. for people with the love of biking, this area is idyllic and very safe. we were impressed with the facilities both on and of the road side for mobility scooters and wheelchairs, often taking priority over cars and other traffic. everywhere was so clean and especially public conveniences. there were nice straight roads to other areas such as Sint-Niklaas and Sint- Pauwels , tempse. many sightseeing spots. Utterly beautiful city with lots to offer.

Utterly beautiful city with lots to offer. A kayaking tour of the city is a great way to see may of the landmarks around the water. The cultural landmarks are fantastic (some churches allow free entry when not during service hours). Gen X Record Shop had someone spinning records and was a great place to sit and have a coffee and beer. Otomat had fantastic pizza and, if you can get a window seat, is a great view to people watch from. Plus, if you're visiting from outside the region, do yourself a favor and go to an AH (grocery store) to grab food and a drink to sit in a park or by the canal. Also to look out for while visiting is the music scene. While the Gentse Feesten is a clear highlight to visit for performances, there are also smaller things to find. Kinky Star (a bar/ music venue) had a great, young band (Rewilding) during my first night in the city. Overall, an easy-to-miss but can't-miss city in the region that I look forward to returning to in the future.
