You slowly drive down a dirt road, surrounded by trees, hearing birds and monkeys. You’re still in Surfside, still right next to the beach–but you’ve stumbled on a magical, secluded bit of jungle, right inside Potrero. The car stops in front of an imposing brown gate. After you press the code, it opens automatically, revealing a beautiful colonial style villa with a carefully cultivated garden, a fountain, a designer pool, and a patio with barbecue. The forest is all around. You leave the car in the secured parking, go up to the house and open the door. The ground floor consists of a very spacious, open room, neatly divided into three sections: a cozy living space with an aged red brick wall and sofas; a dining space with an amazingly large table made of local Guanacaste wood; a fully equipped kitchen with a wine cellar. You briefly picture yourself enjoying a glass at the kitchen’s wooden island. The space is clean, relaxing, peaceful. You did well to book this. The stairs are beckoning you. You climb up, calmly, feeling the wood under your soles. You find three incredible bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, closet space, television, and king size beds. You marvel at the master bedroom’s dressing room, then step outside, on the balcony, and look over the pool and forest. You’re going to have a fantastic time.

Playa Potrero, historically known as Puerto Potrero, was founded around 1883 as a small port supporting inland farming communities through grain exports. Its economy relied on fishing, cattle ranching, and crops like cotton and rice. In the 1980s, tourism expanded along the northern Pacific coast, reaching Potrero after Playa Flamingo became a major resort hub. This brought expats, vacation homes, and eco-tourism, gradually transforming Potrero from a quiet fishing village into a diverse beach town. Potrero enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, making it an ideal beach destination at any month. Located in the Guanacaste province, this region is known for its dry, sunny weather especially from November to April, which is considered the dry season. During this time, you can expect clear skies, low humidity, and daily temperatures between 28–34°C (82–93°F). The green season, from May to October, brings occasional afternoon showers, which refresh the landscape and cool the evenings, while still offering plenty of sunshine.
