After 30 years living abroad (the United States, Switzerland and Spain), we felt the need to come home to France. We chose to settle in the Gironde, and the Médoc in particular. We had always lived in fairly contemporary houses — but the moment we saw the façade of Château Papounan, we fell under its spell. And when we learned that the adjoining parcel of vines came with the house, we didn't hesitate for a second! With our children living abroad, the idea of sharing our home with guests came naturally. We welcome every guest personally, tend our vines ourselves, and serve a homemade breakfast that guests remember long afterwards.

Property info

Château Papounan is a genuine château built in Bordeaux cut stone at the end of the 19th century, in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe vineyards. We tend our own small parcel of vines here (AOC Saint-Estèphe), whose grapes go to the village cooperative. Cared for over the years, the château saw significant upgrades in 2024-2025: every room now has individual air conditioning, upgraded bedding, quality furnishings and refined décor, plus a kettle and a Nespresso machine. Guests enjoy a garden and terrace to relax, high-speed fibre Wi-Fi, and above all a generous homemade breakfast prepared fresh each morning — one of our guests' fondest memories. A calm, characterful base for exploring Saint-Estèphe and the Médoc.

Neighborhood info

Château Papounan is nestled in the heart of Saint-Estèphe, a village of 60 châteaux including 5 classified growths and 36 crus bourgeois. You're surrounded by the great estates of the appellation — Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon-Ségur and many more — reachable on foot or by car (book your visits ahead; we're happy to help arrange them). The village has good local tables, and nearby lie the Gironde estuary and, about an hour away, the wild Atlantic beaches. Bordeaux and its airport are roughly an hour to the south. A peaceful, authentic base for wine lovers, cyclists and anyone who wants to slow down among the vines.
