Built in the 12th century, La Maison Saint-Christophe, located at 21 rue des Chanoines de la Cité Plantagenêt in Le Mans, was part of a group of residences for the canons of Saint-Julien Cathedral. Rue des Chanoines is one of the oldest streets in Le Mans, preserving many historic features such as cart stops, and is lined with several canon houses. The Cité Plantagenêt, the historic heart of Le Mans, is known for its cobbled streets, medieval and Renaissance houses, and iconic monuments. Originally, La Maison Saint-Christophe was part of a large Romanesque residence, likely a former deanery, later subdivided. From the 11th century, canons of the cathedral received land in this area, then called “rue de la Vieille-Rome,” to build individual homes. La Maison Saint-Christophe is documented from 1636 alongside other houses like Saint-Pierre, often grouped or adjoining, reflecting their shared origin. In the 18th century, the house was rebuilt in a classical style, adding elements such as Louis XVI fireplaces and paneling. Romanesque architectural remains are still visible, notably in party walls and cellars. A remarkable home nestled in the heart of Old Le Mans, with an authentic and elegant atmosphere.
