Wansfell Holme is a grade 2 listed country house on the shores of Lake Windermere. It was built for a Mr George Warden in 1830 and was originally set in nearly 200 acres (800,000 m2). By 1851 it was owned by Reverend James John Hornby, provost of Eton, and grandson of the sister of the 12th Earl of Derby. Sir Thomas Wrigley acquired the house in 1859 and it stayed in his family until 1958 when it was sold to the National Trust to meet death duties. The National Trust kept most of the land but sold the house to Pattinsons, a renowned local builder company, who divided into 5 separate dwellings in the late 1959. We have spent the past couple of years putting the house back together, restoring the rooms, and landscaping.
We originally bought just part of Wansfell Holme as a holiday home for ourselves and we've since enjoyed many fabulous holidays and long weekends with our family and friends (including 2 very enthusiastic Border Collies). The amazing scenery, walking, and Lakeland hospitality remains as enticing for us as always and living at Wansfell Holme is a dream come true. If you're new to the area and/ or would like any advice on places to visit, walks, where to eat etc, please let us know and we'll be happy to try and help. We just hope you will enjoy your stay in the Lakes as much as we enjoy living here! David & Gillian
Located c. 600m from Waterhead and the Low Wood Bay Resort (water sport, ferries, pub, restaurants), c. 1 mile to Ambleside, and c. 3 miles to Windermere village. Lake Windermere is c.200m from the front of Wansfell Holme and less than 50 metres from bottom of the meadow (c. 1.5 acres & shared between 1,2&3 Wansfell Holme). Great views across the lake to Wray Castle, Pulwood Bay, The Langdales, The Old Man of Coniston, Wetherlam etc. There is easy access direct from the property to beautiful walks in Jenkins Field (a large field along the shoreline in front of the house), Stagshaw Gardens, to Waterhead or Ambleside, through Skelghyll Woods, up Wansfell and over to Troutbeck, or the Fairfield Horseshoe and many more surrounding fells. There are also some exceptional restaurants within 1 mile of the house, including The Samling (600m), The Stamp House (1 mile), Holbeck Ghyll (800m).
