Please note the Hideaway is for single-family occupancy only — one household sharing the home as a unit, whether that's a couple, a family, siblings, or a solo traveller. We're not set up for separate households sharing or for parties, so the home stays calm and quiet for every guest.

We're Jo and Chris, and the Hideaway is our home in the heart of Durham — a quiet, tucked-away spot between the Castle and the Cathedral, above the River Wear. We've travelled a fair bit — from the Arctic Circle to Australia, across Europe, Asia and the Americas — and we always looked for the same thing: somewhere open and calm, where you feel safe, settle in, and slow right down. For me it comes back to something simple — a cup of coffee and a view. People to watch, nature to watch, a quiet moment to take the world in. I've loved that since childhood. So that's what we set out to make here. Nothing precious, nothing stiff — a beautiful space meant to be used and enjoyed, with fresh flowers in the kitchen, a print by a local Durham photographer on the wall, and good coffee and tea that never runs out. Our greatest joy is hearing a guest say they've fallen for Durham just as completely as we have.

Guests love that the Hideaway is right in the city centre yet tucked away in a quiet, gated spot — the best of both worlds. Step outside and you're a short stroll from Durham's most iconic landmarks: the magnificent Cathedral, the historic Castle, and the winding River Wear. It's a neighbourhood made for exploring on foot. Wander the riverside, browse the independent shops on Saddler Street, or settle into the city's café culture — we love Flat White Kitchen for brunch and Riverview Kitchen for a meal overlooking the water. History lovers can climb the Cathedral's central tower for sweeping views across the rooftops, or spend an afternoon in one of Durham's museums. For a peaceful escape, Crook Hall Gardens is a lovely ten-minute riverside walk — a National Trust haven of interlinking gardens, with the Cathedral on the skyline. And with the train station ten minutes away on foot, the wider region opens up: the Northumberland coast, Beamish living museum, and beyond. Our guests often tell us they love how much they can see and do right here, on foot.
