Location fab, very friendly, comfortable rooms....just a touch warm through the night but wouldn't put me off. Considering above a pub had a good sleep ...wasn't noisy. Allowed to leave our cases which was a great help as train wasn't until afternoon, fab location near everything, great little pub too with a great offer of a card stamp , buy 3 pints get next one free 👍 would defo stay again....five stars 😁 also had everything you needed in the room....the little bowl of sweets on the dresser is a cute touch too ...had an upstairs sun terrace , partly covered with tv showing the rugby 👍 great place to stay ...really enjoyed it. Thankyou

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

We loved all the cobbled streets, the Cathedral, castle and other places of interest nearby. The walks along the river were really lovely and very picturesque. The towns food outlets are geared towards students, so there are not many places to have a “sit down “ meal. But there is a market at the weekends and often other things going on in the market square, as we found to our delight, a group of Morris dancers, fabulous!

We visited the Cathedral which didn’t disappoint, so many features to see and places to sit and reflect. Very good shop too. Walk along the river was lovely as we headed to Crook Hall Gardens. (NT) They are a gem with beautiful plantings and lots of interesting features. I did a free garden tour that was well worth the time. Some medieval buildings and a picturesque second hand bookshop. We had a lovely day.

I thought that the nightlife was going to be bad because of it being so close to Newcastle but I WAS WRONG!! I went out on father's day because of the way my diary hit and it was an amazing night. Went to Home & Botanic for cocktails and a dance. Then on the Monday night i went to a few bars and clubs on the other side. I had an AMAZING few days away! I am 44 and male. I felt amazing!! :)

My wife was born in Durham, and since we have been married for 46 years, we visit family regularly. Unfortunately, over the years, this wonderful city (still is), has lost its soul with the University buying up much of everything around the centre and around the edges. The wonderful community cannot afford to live there anymore so the centre has lost that community feel. Still beautiful architecture, so worth a visit for that alone.

lovely city with a bustling crowd of visitors and students.

lovely city with a bustling crowd of visitors and students. Lots of places of interest, especially Durham Cathedral. Very well organized within the Cathedral, very knowledgeable & interesting staff. Durham is quite hilly and with lots of cobbled streets so would advise people with mobility issues to plan better accessible routes though there are plenty of riverside walks . Beamish village is approximately a 35 minute drive from Durham & where it is wheelchair friendly & a very interesting & picturesque.

I had passed the hotel many times in the 70s while studying at college and university in Durham, but never had the chance to visit - this was my first time. It was easy to get to round the city roads, and it's location is perfect. The staff gave us a warm welcome and were friendly throughout. The rooms were comfortable, breakfast was good.
