We had a wonderful stay at Sixteen B. The apartment was spotlessly clean, cosy, and comfortable, with everything we needed for our stay. It’s located in a peaceful village but still within close proximity to York city centre, making it ideal for both relaxing and exploring. Olga was an excellent host — very attentive and responsive, regularly checking in to make sure everything was okay and if we needed any top-ups. We felt well looked after. We would definitely stay again and highly recommend Sixteen B to others. Thank you, Olga, for a great stay.

Breakfast was delicious and plentiful with lots of options. The hotel is right by the York Minster and The Shambles so we were able to walk everywhere during our stay. Dinner in the Bow Room was very elegant. The bar/lounge is a great place for a cocktail and mid day bite to eat. The views of the old city walls and garden are lovely. The building is historic and next to the Treasurer House first built in 1091. Our room was very large and comfortable. The staff could not have been friendlier or more attentive.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Wonderful city full of history. A must visit place! Things to see: York minster - climb the tower to get a great view across the city: Jorvik Viking centre - the history is incredible; city walls - make sure you walk these; Shambles - these streets are filled with quirky little independent shops. And so much more!

We've travelled widely and York is one of our favourite cities anywhere! We always try to stay there when we visit the UK. This time we could only fit in a 3 days stay, which is hopelessly inadequate. If you are going to York for the first time you should allocate at least a week in the city and another 2 weeks in Yorkshire. And then you'll want to return........ Check out Partisan for breakfast and The Whippet Inn for dinner. Great food at both places. 22 yards for good wine. Visit: The Shambles, The Minster of course, Merchant Adventurers Hall, National Railway Museum, walk the walls, the abbey gardens, Castle Museum, The Guild Hall, river cruise, Castle Howard (20 minutes away). I've barely scratched the surface.

Minster well worth a visit, very interesting museum on its history. Worth having one of the free guided tours. Shambles quaint - a must-see but really busy after about 10am. Betty's was easy to get in to at 8.30pm for a coffee and dessert. Lovely stroll along the Judi Dench Walk by the river - lots of artists and crafters stalls. Unimpressed with the view from the top of Cliffords Tower.

Great place, the castle museum was really good.

Great place, the castle museum was really good. Pubs to recommend the Guy Fawkes Inn beer garden, Ye Olde Starre Inne, House of the Trembling Madness. Taster menu at the Refectory restaurant was lovely. A walk through York’s historic centre and gives you a mix of the city’s oldest and most atmospheric pubs.

The City Cruise was absolutely brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to York Minster and the Shambles. The hop on hop off bus was a must for us and we really enjoyed the ability to sit on the open top deck and hear the history of York while making our way around the city.

York is an interesting buzzing city with lively bars, restaurants and shops and lots to see and do. We took our two grandchildren ages 8 yrs and12 years for 5 days and they absolutely loved it! We went on four different ghost tours, our favourites were the Ghostly Dark Tour and Mad Alice. The kids didn't like the ghost bus much and were terrified at the dungeons. We ate out at Pizza Express which was excellent and an Italian Restaurant in the old Town which we all enjoyed. We all enjoyed the Railway Museum where we spent a morning and enjoyed inside York Minster where they took part in the Lego Challenge. The kids walked miles around York and on the Walls and never complained once which showed how much they enjoyed our trip.

Such a lovely hotel to stay in. Staff super friendly and could not do enough when I had a small issue with my meal, replaced and drink on the house given! Beautiful breakfast and catering for dogs with water available, dog friendly rooms and full use of the foyer and reception area at night with them. Very relaxed evening at the hotel after a day in York. Perfect location for park and ride, 15 mins on the No2 bus into the city centre. Our second visit to mercury and will definitely be back

Good location for York city centre. There is a bus stop opposite and a 15 min bus journey that takes you into town much easier and cheaper than parking the car. Gorgeous hotel with a lot of history, outstanding food. The staff were highly professional but extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in a courtyard room with a view of the beautiful gardens. Lovely spa facilities too. Cannot fault this hotel, would highly recommend.
