Company info

Glamis Castle has been the ancestral seat to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372, inspiration for Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and birthplace of HRH The Princess Margaret. Since 1372 the Castle has been at the centre of the Estate and continues in this role today. Whilst a lot has changed since Robert II granted the lands at Glamis to Sir John Lyon, the underlying principle of having the Castle at the centre of the local community is as strong now as ever before. There are new and diverse ownership's in and around the village of Glamis but the Estate has a pivotal role through the provision of the management for the surrounding properties.

Property info

Glamis House was built around 1800 for the accommodation of Patrick Proctor, the Factor to the 10th Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne. It was later occupied by Charlotte Grimstead, Lady Glamis. Two of Charlotte’s sons inherited the Strathmore title – Thomas, who became the 12th Earl in 1846 and Claude, 13th Earl. She was therefore the great grandmother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (the future Queen Mother). Glamis House became the Dower House until 1881, when it reverted to its original purpose and became the Factor’s House once more. It was occupied by Andrew Ralston, Glamis Estate Factor until 1912, when his son, Gavin Ralston succeeded him as Factor, and carried on living here until 1949. In the late 20th century, Glamis House became the residence of Mary, Dowager Countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne, widow of the 17th Earl. During her stay HM The Queen, HM The Queen Mother and HRH Princess Margaret were regular visitors. Michael, 18th Earl, then made Glamis House his home with his third wife. The 19th Earl decided to renovate Glamis House in 2017 so this notable historic residence can continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by a wide range of people for years to come.

Neighborhood info

Glamis is a beautiful village. There is a footpath opposite the driveway and you can walk into the picturesque village, visit the castle, or enjoy a coffee and something to eat in the cafe (closed Mondays), visit the Gin Bothy shop or browse the local art gallery.
