Thoroughly modernised - it even has electricity - yet full of the character of buildings of its time (1910), the Bothy is a place of peace. Surrounded by the woods and fields of secluded Glenquiech, and by its Highland cattle and Soay sheep, from this little house you can walk or cycle for miles, undisturbed; or be still, and listen to the silence. Red squirrels scamper. Red kites soar. Formerly maids' accommodation, it's now a charming, small cottage with one double bedroom, a well-lit shower-room, kitchen with dining table and a cosy living-room. The bothy is centrally heated (oil-fired), well insulated and has a cracking little woodburner. It was restored and refurbished in the summer of 2018. There's a washing machine - and extra logs for the woodburner - in the wooden shed behind the bothy. Surprisingly for an Angus glen, there's super-fast broadband (not from BT.) In the old steading just to the east of the bothy, there's a table-tennis room that guests are welcome to use. Because of the cattle and sheep on the farm, a dog or dogs probably not a good idea. There's no TV in the bothy; but I can supply one (Freeview only)
I live in the farmhouse near the bothy and so am available or on my mobile for any queries or to help plan walks, days out and so on. I respect guests' privacy and peace as the primary reason for their coming. So I'm reactive, rather than pro-. But anyone who wants to come here already has a great deal in common with me; and I enjoy meeting guests very much.
For its peace, unspoilt beauty and wildlife alone, Angus is remarkable. But most locals don't know about Glenquiech, the hidden glen. Its name is a corruption of quaich, a bowl-shaped cup, which describes this glen's topography. You can walk for miles from the bothy's door without seeing another soul. The farm's mature woodland is magical. The small graveyard of the estate's former owners is enchanting. The views from the hill above the bothy are very fine. Every corner of the farm affords vistas and views, particularly of the Sidlaw hills to the south. The welcoming Drovers' Inn in Memus is 2.5 miles away. Glamis Castle is 20 minutes, as is the Pictish Stones museum in Meigle. We are 35 minutes from Dundee, with its V&A, museums, theatres and restaurants. St Cyrus, a beautiful beach and nature reserve, is 30 minutes' drive. There's a good pub in Johnshaven, which serves local seafood; and the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre is well worth visiting. Above all, though, come here for the walking or cycling. The Brown and White Cathertuns, Kinpurnie Hill, Glen Clova, Glen Prosen, Glen Doll and the Cairngorms all speak for themselves.
