Ventnor Town Nestled on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, Ventnor is a picturesque seaside town, once renowned as one of Britain’s most celebrated Victorian health resorts thanks to its unique microclimate. Set beneath St Boniface Down—the island’s highest point—the town cascades down a steep hillside towards its attractive seafront and beach, giving it a distinctive and characterful setting. The beach itself is a sheltered suntrap, perfect for relaxing, swimming, and family days by the sea. Lining the shore are charming beach huts, many of which were once Victorian bathing machines, now available to hire alongside deckchairs and private beach areas. Ventnor offers plenty to see and do. The marina and bandstand are focal points along the seafront, providing wonderful sea views, while the nearby Ventnor Haven Fishery is the go-to spot for fresh local crab, lobster, and traditional fish and chips. Just opposite, the beautifully landscaped Cascade Gardens tumble down the cliffs, following the winding road back up into town. A little further along, families can enjoy the children’s paddling pool, complete with a giant map of the Isle of Wight, and from here you can take scenic coastal walks along the sea wall to Wheelers Bay and Bonchurch. To the west of the seafront, Ventnor Park offers a peaceful green space with classic Victorian charm. Beyond this lies the famous Ventnor Botanic Garden, set within the unique Undercliff area, where the mild climate supports a stunning collection of subtropical plants—keep an eye out for the island’s native wall lizards. A short walk from the gardens leads to Steephill Cove, a hidden gem and one of the island’s most tranquil and unspoilt beaches. Ventnor’s esplanade is lined with a variety of pubs, cafés, and restaurants, with even more dining options tucked away in the town itself.
