FAQs about hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

Fantastic for history, military interest and shopping!

Fantastic for history, military interest and shopping! Great access to Isle of Wight via ferry or hovercraft. Book in advance for best fares, excellent bus service on Isle of Wight but be aware taxis must be pre-booked and there is no Uber on the island.

Portsmouth is a great city with quite a few events happening throughout the year. Being a naval port Portsmouth its blessed with great history, the dockyard is a must visit showing various ships like HMS Victory etc. Charles Dickens birthplace is a little hidden but worth a visit, Old Portsmouth takes you back in time giving an insight into the Cities history.

Southsea is a wonderful place with a lovely beach and heath,...

Southsea is a wonderful place with a lovely beach and heath, and there were lots of nice restaurants and coffee shops along the seafront both towards and beyond the pier. There is a good fish and chip restaurant on the pier itself. There are plenty of good, reasonably priced places to stay in Portsmouth and Southsea. The Portsmouth shops are very good and buses and trains are pretty reliable. It is well worth a visit and I was sad to leave ! I will be returning as soon as possible.

If you love history you'll love Portsmouth.

If you love history you'll love Portsmouth. It is pretty flat and easy to get around by foot. If not , there is always Uber, or taxis queuing up by the railway station. Not only can you visit the Naval Dockyards but also the D-day Museum, and the local Portsmouth Museum . Most of the pubs have a long history (and some pretty good ale) and Portsmouth is also the birthplace of Charles Dickens; the house is another museum to visit. And whilst you are resting (between historical museums) the Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping centre is well worth a visit, not only for shopping, but also for a glass of wine, or an ice cream overlooking the estuary. We enjoyed visiting the Southsea Brewhouse and Kitchen to sample their craft beers. You can tour the harbour on a trip by boat, or you can go up the Spinnaker tower and view everything from above. So much to do, we will have to return another day.

We wanted to visit the Historic Naval Dockyards. It did not disappoint!! It was absolutely brilliant! Spent 2 days exploring the ships and submarine. The Mary Rose museum is a must to see! Incredible!! Great place to visit, lots of cafes, and places to rest. I would definitely visit again! 👍😊

Nice tidy and clean room with decent bathroom. Very friendly staff and great welcome. There's also a night entrance for when you've stayed out a little too long. As we went in, the pub was very noisy, so I was expecting to be to wait until it closed for noise levels to drop, but none of the noise makes it through to the hotel section. Portsmouth hotel prices can be ridiculous. Cosham is only about 15 mins drive outside of the city centre and cabs are reasonable in terms of cost.

Perfect location for our one night stay in Portsmouth. We walked home quickly after a day of shopping at Gunwharf quays and then took the catamaran to isle of wight the next day from Portsmouth Harbour. The apartment was large and comfy. We used the kitchen for dinner.
