I have always been a home bird and never left Struan, let alone the island!!, until I married and moved, not so many miles, to Carbost. I was brought up in Ullinish (Mum & Dad live opposite Ornum, in the family home), and my Brother built next door. Ornum was built several years ago, on ground Dad gave me from their croft. Since then, I have got married, had 2 little boys and subsequently out-grown Ornum. I very much enjoy hosting visitors from all over the world; a few return each year and have become dear friends.

Ornum is nestled in Ullinish, one of the few crofting townships left on the island; where a lot of the old, traditional methods are still carried out today. Hay-making on my Father's croft is a particular favourite time of year for me! The view from the house looks out on to Loch Bracadale, which has the small islands of Tarner, Wiay and Harlosh within. The MacLeod's Tables are also clearly visible - the sunsets are breath-taking! There are stunning walks from the doorstep including Oronsay island (tidal) and Struan Broch being favourites. Wildlife is abundant and something we take very much for granted. The village of Struan has a post office and shop (open mornings) which sells groceries, fresh bread/milk and daily papers. There is a bookshop/cafe - Bog Myrtle (I have heard fabulous reports). Cioch Direct (outdoor clothing retail unit). Churches. There is the Crofters' Bite Takeaway van in Struan, open Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm - 8pm - worth checking on their facebook page whats the special - really yummy! Portree has a supermarket and a selection of shops, bars, banks, churches, restaurants, library, swimming pool, cinema, post office and fuel stations. Dunvegan has grocery stores, churches, post office, fuel, hotels, restaurants, bakery and of course a castle!
