About the Hosts We are a husband-and-wife team with a background in the building trade, and we restored this 18th-century cottage ourselves, using our own skills and trusted local trades where specialist work was needed. The aim was simple: keep the character of the cottage while making it comfortable, practical and well finished for modern stays. Where possible, we chose durable, eco-conscious materials and focused on doing the job properly rather than cutting corners. With experience in hospitality, we understand what guests actually value — a clean, well-equipped space, a comfortable bed, reliable Wi-Fi and a place that feels easy to stay in. That approach has guided every decision. We live locally and know the North East well. From historic towns to open countryside and coastlines, it’s a great area to explore, and we’re always happy to share local recommendations if needed. The Village & Location Middridge is a historic County Durham village with roots dating back to around 500AD, giving it a rich sense of place and character. The village is known for its fascinating past, including the Middridge Hoard, tales of faeries on the village green, and its place in early racing history — details that add to the area’s quiet charm rather than overwhelm it. From the cottage, you can enjoy scenic countryside walks directly from the door, as well as a nearby park and children’s play area, making it ideal for both short breaks and longer stays. Just a short stroll away, The Bay Horse pub serves quality home-cooked meals and locally sourced drinks, with a welcoming outdoor seating area overlooking the village green — perfect for a relaxed evening without needing the car.
