Bampton is a charming historic market town in mid-Devon, perched on the banks of the River Batherm on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Despite its small size, Bampton has a surprising range of local amenities including pubs, restaurants, a late-opening supermarket, post office, butcher, greengrocer, chemist, and a heritage and visitor centre. The town has a rich history stretching from its Saxon origins through the Norman motte and bailey, the medieval wool and pony trade, and the quarrying of local stone. Bampton was awarded official 'Walkers Are Welcome' status in 2022, recognising the excellent network of footpaths that criss-cross the surrounding countryside. The town sits on the Exe Valley Way long-distance footpath and is also on the West Country Way cycle route. Exmoor National Park, Wimbleball Lake, and the Grand Western Canal are all within easy reach for walks, cycle rides, and outdoor activities. The annual Bampton Charter Fair was established by Royal Charter in 1258 and is held every year on the last Thursday in October. Originally one of the largest sheep fairs in the west of England, the fair today features a traditional funfair, street market, craft fair in the church, and local produce -- a wonderful community event with over 760 years of history. Bampton is also famous for its floral displays, having won the national Britain in Bloom competition several times.
