Carry on another 200 metres along the fjord and you'll find the swimming area, where you can slip into crystal-clear water just steps from the boats. This is a home, not a hotel. Vathy is one of those places that stops you mid-sentence. It sits at the end of a long, narrow fjord: mountains on both sides, the water dead calm - and it genuinely looks like someone made it up. Rina square is a three-minute stroll from the villa, and it has everything you need for a very good day. Five tavernas serve a mix of traditional Greek dishes and visitor favourites, there's a coffee shop for slow mornings, two minimarkets, a take-away, a boutique wine cellar, and a lovely little fashion and jewellery boutique worth a browse. From there, another 200 metres along the fjord takes you to the swimming area, where you can dive off the rocks into deep, clear water, or pick up a kayak from the Kalymnos Kayak Centre and paddle out to the Daskalio Cave — the "Secret School" carved into the clifftop, where priests taught Greek children in secret during the Ottoman occupation. Keep paddling and you'll find a sea cave with a swing dangling just above the water — one of those spots that feels almost too good to be real. The beaches of Kampi, Megali Almira and Mikri Almira are all within easy reach by kayak or boat, each one quieter and wilder than the last. Kalymnos is one of the world's great sport climbing destinations, and Vathy has its own cluster of crags right on the doorstep. Little Eden sits just above a quiet beach north of the fjord, reachable by a short boat ride or kayak on a calm day. Up in the fertile valley above the village, the E.T. sector offers gorgeous views over the fjord and the Turkish coast. And Rina Valley has well-protected routes on good quality rock, approached on foot directly from the village. When the harness comes off, the fjord is waiting. It's the kind of place people come to for a week and quietly start rearranging next year's calendar to come back.
