IN 1816, George Herbert, the 11th Earl of Pembroke inherited the vast Fitzwilliam estate which extended through South East Dublin, from Merrion Square in town along the coast through Merrion out to Blackrock, and inland through Mount Merrion to Dundrum and beyond to the Dublin mountains. This vast estate became known as the Pembroke Estate, and Pembroke Road and the surrounding roads in Ballsbridge were developed by the 11th Earl and his successors. The architecture is of the Georgian period (1714 to 1830), tall elegant houses built on wide tree-lined roads, and the glorious Herbert Park ( a 10 mins stroll from the Suite), was gifted to Dublin city by a later Earl of Pembroke in 1903. A short walk over Baggot Street bridge will bring you to Fitzwilliam Square, a beautiful Georgian square developed in the late 1700s, and then onto Merrion Square, one of the finest examples of Georgian design in the city.
