The city of Ancona is located on the central Adriatic coast on a promontory formed by the northern slopes of Monte Conero or Monte d'Ancona. This promontory gives rise to a gulf, the gulf of Ancona, in the innermost part of which is the natural harbor. In the city there are various beaches, both high and low coast. The most iconic and most central is that of the Passetto, with several white rocks including the Seggiola del Papa, one of the symbols of the city, and the Rock of the Quadrato. Other rocky beaches follow one another towards the Conero Riviera to the south, among the most characteristic are Mezzavalle and Portonovo.
