Hugely helpful host, who went out of their way to support us with information, and then also came by to loan us (without asking) a snow tool clear our screen and snow after a very heavy fall of snow unexpectedly.

Beautiful old traditional house, but with good facilities. Very pretty little village. Very kind and helpful staff. A great traditional dinner and breakfast for our family of five. Good to taste everything and expose ourselves to all flavors.

Company info

Dekita worked in real estate developing retail facilities in Tokyo for around 10 years, but in 2018 the CEO, Mr. Tokioka, moved back to his home region of Wakasa, in Fukui Prefecture. Mr. T, as I call him, wanted to put more effort towards reviving the ever-fading countryside of Japan and so took up that effort in Kumagawa-juku. Since 2018 Dekita has taken several properties in Kumagawa-juku and turned them into a reception, café, and lodging. We manage the 4 lodgings under the name "Yao-Kumagawa". You rent an entire home, not just a room, so you can feel like you are apart of the town. In 2023, we also opened a campground and luxury villa, Sanza-Kumagawa, up in the mountains overlooking the post town of Kumagawa-juku. For those looking to be more in the mountains, we recommend you check out Sanza-Kumagawa.

Property info

Yao-Kumagawa is a collection of properties within Kumagawa-juku, a post town with a long and deep connection to the former capital of Kyoto. Kumagawa-juku sits along the Mackerel Highway or "Saba-Kaido" which was an important trade route for mackerel among other goods. We've taken old and abandoned buildings within Kumagawa-juku and renovated them into beautiful homes. The four homes are "Yamane", "Tsugumi", "Hibari", and "Hotaru". Each home has it's own unique features and each comes with a fully equipped kitchen.

Neighborhood info

Many goods from the Wakasa Bay in Obama would pass along the Mackerel Highway or "Saba-Kaido" and pass through Kumagawa-juku along their way to the old capital of Kyoto. Kumagawa-juku was used as a sort of staging ground to rest and prepare for the day long journey to Kyoto. Walking the streets, you'll come across many historical buildings from the Edo period, but more importantly is that there are some really awesome people living in Kumagawa-juku. During your stay in Kumagawa-juku, you can meet master potter, Nao Tobinaga who can help you to make your own Kumagawa-inspired pottery. If you want to learn woodcarving or how to be a ninja, Mr. Yuichi Niino is your man. If you go into the mountains, there is a dam lake, picnic spot, and several trails to go hiking and to simply be in nature. Don't hesitate to ask us about anything! We look forward to having you visit Kumagawa-juku.
