The Oguni S House, located in Oguni, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a residential work designed by architect Toyo Ito (1941-) and completed in 1997. The clients were sculptor Ryusuke Sueta and sculptural artist Shiori Sueta. It serves as both their residence and studio, incorporating multiple functions including living quarters, a studio, and exhibition spaces. The couple commissioned Toyo Ito to design what they envisioned as their “final dwelling place” in Oguni, Ryusuke Sueda's hometown. After the original owner passed away, the building stood vacant for six years, suffering significant deterioration. In 2024, we acquired the property. Following extensive renovations, the building has been restored to its former state and reborn as a lodging facility where guests can experience the architectural charm firsthand. Oguni Town is a rich land blessed with hot springs, nature, and history, and is very famous as a tourist destination. We hope you will discover the wonders of Oguni starting from this lodging facility and the nearby “Roadside Station Yu Station.” Oguni has many natural attractions like the Yūsui Gorge and waterfalls that you can enjoy simply by walking or car.
Share Architecture operates under the concept of “Preserving Famous Buildings as Part of Japanese Culture,” undertaking projects to conserve and utilize Japan's historic architectural treasures. We engage in preservation activities for remarkable buildings preserved throughout Japan. We invite you to stay overnight in each structure, allowing you to fully experience the unique charm of these buildings—an experience far beyond mere sightseeing.
Kumamoto is blessed with hot springs, and this small town of Oguni also boasts wonderful waters. From the Nara period, Tsue-dachi Onsen has been known, while Nuru-yu Onsen was used for treatment by victims of the Nagasaki atomic bomb. Gaku-no-yu Onsen and Hage-no-yu Onsen are cherished by many as geothermal villages. Each is a precious resource of Oguni. We hope you will combine exploring nature with visiting our abundant hot springs, discovering the best of Oguni and inviting others to experience it too.
