Perfect for Kumano Kodo hikers looking for a peaceful stay with dinner, onsen access, and deep body recovery.
SOLA Wellness Retreat Kumano is a quiet traditional Japanese house near the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, created for travelers seeking rest, recovery, and an authentic local experience.
Especially suitable for hikers walking the Ogumotori-goe and Kogumotori-goe routes, or for those unable to find accommodation in Koguchi.
After a long day of hiking, guests can enjoy homemade Japanese meals, nearby hot springs, and optional Japanese-style bodywork sessions focused on relaxation, physical recovery, and nervous system balance.
This house is not a luxury hotel, nor a perfectly renovated designer space.
For many years, the house stood empty in the mountains of Kumano. I personally spent more than half a year slowly restoring and cleaning it by hand while living here alone.
Because the property is rented, I could not completely rebuild or modernize the house. Some parts remain simple and imperfect. However, many guests tell me they feel deeply relaxed here because of the quiet atmosphere, nature, and genuine local feeling.
This retreat was created with the hope that travelers can rest both body and mind after walking the Kumano Kodo.
Nearby hot springs, mountain air, slow evenings, and a peaceful Japanese lifestyle offer a rare chance to step away from stress and noise.
A humble but heartfelt place for deep rest, recovery, and experiencing everyday life in Kumano.
Welcome to SOLA Wellness Retreat Kumano.
Two years ago, I moved from Tokyo to Kumano in search of a quieter and more natural way of life.
After many years of working closely with people’s physical well-being in the city, I began to feel that modern life was leaving many people deeply exhausted, both physically and mentally.
This feeling eventually led me to Kumano — a special place of sacred mountains, pure water, hot springs, and deep silence that has supported rest and healing for centuries.
Located near the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes and Kumano Hongu Taisha, this area offers a rare environment where travelers can slow down, reconnect with nature, and recover from the stress of everyday life.
I created this small retreat for people walking the Kumano Kodo who are seeking not only accommodation, but also deep rest, warmth, and a genuine local experience.
For guests who wish, I also offer private Japanese-style bodywork and recovery sessions focused on relaxation, balance, and physical recovery after hiking.
This house itself is old and simple. It is not a luxury hotel or a perfectly renovated designer space. For many years, it stood empty in the mountains of Kumano, and I personally spent more than half a year restoring and cleaning it little by little by hand.
Because the property is rented, I could not completely rebuild or modernize it. Some parts remain imperfect and traditional. However, many guests tell me they feel deeply relaxed here because of the quiet atmosphere, nature, and genuine local feeling.
Although my English is not perfect, I sincerely care about each guest and do my best to provide a peaceful, supportive, and comfortable stay.
I hope your time here becomes a meaningful and healing part of your journey in Kumano.
