Yoichi is located in the western part of Hokkaido, at the eastern base of the Shakotan Peninsula, and has a population of about 20,000 people. The town’s northern side faces the Sea of Japan, while the other three sides are surrounded by gentle hills, making it a land blessed with both marine and mountain produce. Yoichi initially developed through herring fishing, but today, the fishing industry is thriving with a focus on shrimp, squid, and flatfish. Additionally, the town takes advantage of its climate and land for fruit cultivation, boasting the highest production volumes in Hokkaido for apples, grapes, and pears. Yoichi is also well-known as the setting for the popular morning drama series Massan, which depicted a couple passionate about whisky making. In addition to its famous whisky, Yoichi is also active in wine production, making it a town rich in both whisky and wine culture.
