Gaia Ella is more than just an ecolodge. It’s a small mountain community built for people who want to slow down, breathe properly again, and experience Ella away from the crowds and noise below. We’re high on the edge of Ella, surrounded by jungle, with views of Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak and Kuda Ravana waterfall. Gaia was built in 2024 using natural materials and low-impact systems designed to work with the environment around us. Our hot water is heated by the sun, we don’t use air conditioning — up here the mountain breeze does the job naturally. Filtered drinking water is available if you want to reduce your plastic waste, and much of the food served in our kitchen comes either from our garden or nearby farms. The people who run Gaia are local too; this place is deeply connected to the community around it. Mornings here usually start slowly: mist moving through the valley, fresh fruit and homemade breakfast, tea before yoga, birds and squirrels louder than traffic. Some guests head out hiking, others stay all day in the yoga shala, reading in the chill spaces, cooling off in the ice bath, or watching the clouds roll over the mountains. Our yoga classes are open to everyone, whether you practise every day or have never stepped on a mat before. More importantly, every class directly supports local village projects. The yoga proceeds go into school renovation initiatives and bringing yoga programmes to children and teachers in nearby communities. Gaia is not a party hostel, and it’s not a luxury resort pretending to be “eco.” It’s a peaceful space for travellers who enjoy nature, good food, honest conversations, and waking up somewhere that actually feels different. And one thing you really need to know: most people come for a few nights. Quite a few end up changing their plans and staying longer. We can’t wait to welcome you to our sanctuary in the hills.

Gaia Ella sits on the quieter mountain side of Ella, where the town feels close but the noise feels far away. Guests love the views of Ella Rock, Ella Gap, Little Adam’s Peak and Kuda Ravana waterfall, especially in the morning when the sun rises over the mountains and the valley slowly wakes up. The neighbourhood is green, calm and full of nature sounds: birds, squirrels, wind in the trees, village life, tuk tuks passing in the distance, and sometimes the train moving through the hills. It is a good place to rest, but also a great base for hiking, waterfalls and exploring Sri Lanka’s hill country. From the area, guests can head out to many of Ella’s best-known places, including Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock, Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls, Ravana Cave, Dhowa Rock Temple, tea plantations and viewpoints around the valley. The railway line and the stone arches of Nine Arch Bridge are part of Ella’s charm, and many guests plan their day around watching the train pass through the jungle. Ella is also a good place if you like exploring on foot. Nearby routes include The Pekoe Trail Stage 15, from Makulella to Ella, and Stage 16, from Ella to Demodara, as well as smaller paths through tea fields, forest edges, village roads and mountain viewpoints. For waterfall lovers, there are also quieter places to discover beyond the main sights, including Secret Waterfall and Pallewela Ella waterfall. Some are more local and less polished than the famous attractions, which is exactly why many guests enjoy them. Ella town itself has cafés, local restaurants, small shops, fresh juice places and a lively traveller atmosphere, while the neighbourhood around Gaia still feels peaceful enough to come back, slow down and hear the mountains again.
