Our secluded resort aims first of all to provide the most select hospitality in Tissamaharama: we can do this because all our guests are looked after by the owners themselves, my father, mother and I, and because we have just 5 exclusive cabanas. My father started out as a Yala safari-driver, learning to speak fluently his unique form of English - and how to get by in many other languages - with visitors of all nationalities. He knows more-or-less everything there is to know about the animals you will see not only in Yala but here in our place on the bank of the stream or surrounded by rice-paddies. My mother knows everything there is to know about how to prepare authentic Sri Lankan village home cuisine. I see myself as one of the young generation who realise that visitors to Sri Lanka are ‘guests’, not ‘tourists’ – a different mind-set than has often been in the past. I have taken over from my father in developing our exclusive resort to ensure it maintains its distinct character and closeness to the nature which surrounds us.
