Walatta House is one of the most unique villas on the south coast. The house is partially ‘submerged’ into a hillside that overlooks the Indian Ocean and offers a seamless junction between architecture and nature. It is a superb example of contemporary design. The imperative was to maximise interaction between the indoors and out, to create a sense of openness and space. Thus the landscape is used as an integral design element with an open sided living room offering stunning views across the infinity pool to the ocean, the beaches and the sky. Indoors, too, the design blurs any distinction between house and garden. Courtyards and landscape penetrate the bedrooms and bathrooms, allowing maximum airflow and natural ventilation, and the heat absorbing grass roof also minimises the need for air conditioning - although all 3 bedrooms do have that option available. The rectangular infinity pools runs the length of the house, and the secluded beaches are just a few metres down the slope. There are 3 bedrooms - 2 doubles and 1 twin - all ensuite and with air con. The bathrooms are indoor / outdoor and have views onto the gardens. The kitchen and staff house is in a separate

There are no private beaches in Sri Lanka and so whilst empty by European standards there are always other people around. Never leave valuables unattended and please keep our beach gate closed at all times. We have lovely beaches within walking distance. Directly from our beach gate is a small bay where it is seasonally safe to paddle about. Walk to the left around the bay and you’ll reach a nearly deserted beach that is lovely for walks but we suggest you do not swim here. For safer swimming we have two bays to the west. Walk out the gate to the top of the hill and then follow the road / track that runs parallel to the beach. The first bay is known as Seenimodara and has fun waves to jump around in. The second – accessed by walking around the rocks at the west end of Seenimodara – is known as Mahawella and is great for swimming and long beach walks. With all beaches and swimming take care of all valuables and girls should not walk alone or in revealing swimwear.
