The Wood has traditionally been an area largely occupied by the Italian community who bought their skill in tomato growing to the area many years ago. Like many cities this has given way to both economic changes and housing infill. Certainly there remains an Italian community in the area today. A short walk away is the Centre of New Zealand, a pleasant stroll and climb to the peak where you can orientate yourself to the city and beyond. There are many tracks along the route that allow for further exploration also. A must do! It will take about 20-30 minutes depending upon fitness. Also within walking distance of about 1 km is the Queen's Gardens that offers a gentle meander past duck ponds and lovely roses that leads to the Sutor Art Gallery where you may enjoy a coffee or lovely lunch while over looking the gardens. A peaceful setting, you may enjoy a stroll through the gallery after. If you enjoy a coffee or brunch, just minutes away is Bobby Frank's a quaint cafe where you can enjoy siting kerbside surrounded by floral planters. If it's been a long day and you just feel like a nice cold one with the option of some takeaways, why not try our local Sprig and Fern.
