As Casas resultam do restauro em 2022 do edifício do antigo Correio-mor, primeiro serviço postal em Portugal, criado em 1520 pelo Rei D. Manuel I. Foi mantida a fachada do edifício, tendo sido o interior completamente renovado e criados vários espaços modernos e completamente equipados para 2 a 5 pessoas, tendo acesso a um pátio privativo no seu interior. A cada Casa foi dado um nome que remete para a antiga utilização do edifício: Casa do Correio, Casa do Selo, Casa da Carta, Casa do Carteiro, Casa do Postal, Casa da Encomenda e Casa da Mala-posta.
As Casas do Pátio estão no coração do centro histórico de Coimbra, num inesperado pátio localizado na Rua Fernandes Thomas, no interior da antiga muralha de Coimbra, a escassos metros de uma das portas da cidade medieval, o Arco de Almedina, do pitoresco Quebra-Costas e da monumental Sé Velha. Têm uma localização privilegiada, a cinco minutos a pé do conjunto arquitetónico considerado Património Mundial da Humanidade em 2013, do Rio Mondego, bem como da Baixa e da Alta de Coimbra. Quem nos visita poderá calcorrear e conhecer a pé tanto a Baixa (zona de comércio tradicional, restauração e casas de fado) como a Alta (onde se localiza a famosa Universidade, a primeira a surgir em Portugal e a segunda mais antiga da Europa).
