Why Casa do Mártir? Because it's in the heart of the parish of Martir, named after the martyr St Sebastian, and the house is opposite the chapel in honour of the saint. In fact, the chapel was built with the help of a donation from the family of the former owner of the house, which is described on a tombstone on the outside wall. This project came about after I travelled to the Douro in 2017 to take part in a half-marathon in the Douro wine region. During that stay, I fell in love with this incredible landscape and decided to buy the house, which was little more than a ruin. The restoration and reconstruction process took a long time and was always concerned with maintaining the architecture, materials and colours of the area, while still making contemporary adaptations. In fact, it was the result of a great deal of commitment and effort, but a very rewarding one, which is reflected in the final result that can be seen in both the general appearance and the details. We recently decided to open the three rooms on the ground floor to the public with the support of the wine cellar, which has been transformed into a breakfast room and leisure area. The swimming pool is a peaceful space where you can enjoy the landscape of vineyards and hills. There are a number of activities that we inform you about and help you plan, with a special emphasis on walking tours of the hillsides and mountains. We want our guests to enjoy their time here, with space and time being the true luxury of our days. Welcome to Casa do Mártir! Helena and Luís
