History of Gaula Gaula is a parish located in the municipality of Santa Cruz, on Madeira Island. Its history dates back to 1509 when it was founded as the chaplaincy of Santa Maria da Luz by King Manuel I. The name "Gaula" is linked to chivalric romances such as "Amadis de Gaula" and "The Quest for the Holy Grail".
