The hotel has an exceptional location. Room is clean, spacious and cosy. The breakfast was full of choices. The offer of excursions is very nice. The absolutely pleasant and warm to my heart was the attention to me. The greetings before breakfast were so sincere and kind. FAQs about hotels in Madeira Archipelago

The Island of Eternal Spring

With lush landscapes, brightly coloured flowers and a mild, year-round climate, it’s easy to see why Madeira is called the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. Its interior is mountainous, so most resorts are coastal, many at the foot of steep cliffs.

One such resort is Paul do Mar, a fishing village known for whale watching and surfing, as is Jardim do Mar, on a plateau just east. Nearby Calheta has 2 white sand beaches protected by breakwaters.

The main resort is the capital Funchal. Cascading down slopes, it has the lion’s share of 5-star hotels in Madeira on Booking.com. A cable car ascending into the hills offers fantastic views towards the harbour where cruise liners and ferries from neighbouring Porto Santo island are berthed.

East, Caniço’s sandy beach is nestled between rocky cliffs, while Santa Cruz is the nearest resort to Madeira Airport. Machico is the 2nd biggest city and has the best nightlife outside Funchal, but the best Madeira hotels for families are in quieter resorts such as Porto da Cruz in the north.

Santana is home to the triangular-shaped, thatched houses typical of the island, and twisting mountain roads lead to São Vicente, an attractive hill town with red-roofed houses. By the north-western tip is the village of Porto Moniz whose offshore rocks shelter natural rock pools.

If you are into a hotel where you can see and hear children screaming and crying and throwing tantrums at any given moment of day or evening, Vila Baleira Resort is for you. The little ones made their presence heard with non stop screams at the beach, by the pool, in the lobby and in all restaurants. The hotel itself is nicely located, close to the beautiful beach but a little outdated, looking like a 1970s construction. Room was big and bed was pretty comfortable, balcony with nice view over the ocean. My favorite part was Dunas restaurant, with good vibes, sheltered by palm trees and a sand dune, with friendly staff.

Some good hiking nearby.

Some good hiking nearby. It is of course pretty steep even on the roads. We visited for the swimming but, it being December and just after a storm, the pools were closed. Our stay was for 5 days and we kept busy but the place is quiet in December. The amount of car parking implies the place is busy with day trippers when the weather is warmer - and the pools are open.

São Vicente is an excellent base from which to explore Madeira, It has good road connections meaning you can get to anywhere on the island in good time. The town itself will not hold your attention for too long so a hire car is recommended to allow exploration of the rest of the island. There are 3 decent supermarkets in and around town with Continente in the centre being particularly well stocked. Parking in the town was free at the time of this review but there appear to be plans to charge with bays already painted with blue lines. This, in my opinion is a mistake as many will bypass the town if they have to pay for parking, to the detriment of local businesses.

Great location, calmer than staying in Funchal but close enough to easily visit different places. The best beach, with gold sand (imported from Morocco) is not far away by car, at Machico. Do hire a car though ..visiting places by taxi or local bus would not work so well (takes more time).
