Wake to birdsong and a long view over Tomar from our quiet corner of the countryside. Horto do Amor is a peaceful retreat set in a living garden we planted and tend ourselves — a 2,000 m² patch of biodiversity on our organic family farm, five kilometres from Tomar. Your accommodation is a bright, spacious loft apartment with its own private garden and barbecue, entirely to yourselves. Recently restored to a high standard, it has excellent insulation, triple-glazed windows and insulated external doors, so it stays cool through summer and warm in the cooler months. High ceilings and a mix of antique and modern furniture give it a serene, welcoming character. Inside there’s a comfortable bedroom, a living area, a well-equipped kitchenette, a bathroom, a laundry area and private parking — an easy place to settle whether you’re here to explore the region, slow down, or work quietly from home. The loft is kept cool in summer by an energy-efficient heat pump that draws in and cools fresh air and a silent fan. Outside is where it comes alive. Wander the garden, meet the herbs, vegetables and olive trees, and pick what’s in season for your meals. In summer, cool off in our open-air water tank — borehole-fed and constantly refreshed, a bath under the open sky. There’s a hammock and loungers for the shade, bicycles for exploring, and an EV charging point on site. Fibre-optic Wi-Fi, heating and utilities are included, and we’re glad to help you plan your days — we’ve lived here a long time and know the area well. Lake Zêzere (Castelo de Bode) is about ten minutes away for an open-water swim, and Tomar’s UNESCO-listed Convent of Christ, the last headquarters of the Knights Templar, is the same short drive. Easy access to the A13 makes us a simple first or last stop on a trip through Portugal. We’re an international couple living and working the land through regenerative, syntropic agriculture, and well-behaved dogs are genuinely welcome. Available for short or long stays.
We're an international couple in our sixties who have lived, travelled and worked all over the world before putting down roots here near Tomar. Both of us follow long spiritual paths built around meditation and yoga, and we share our home with Sasha the dog and our two cats, Tatu and Lua. We're deeply involved in the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems in Portugal, through a foundation we helped create called Terra Agora. Most mornings you'll find us in the garden, growing the food we eat and working alongside volunteers who come to learn regenerative farming. In the afternoons we like to walk and swim in the nearby lakes, and now and then we slip away to our favourite beaches and inland corners of the country. We love to cook, and we love to share our world with others. Having travelled so much, we especially enjoy the company of people who are open — happy to swap opinions, stories and experiences. Ceres is an artist and paints; Ivan is usually mending something around the house or out in his syntropic agroforest. We know this region well and are always glad to share recommendations, whether you're after a quiet corner, a good meal or somewhere to swim.
Having travelled the world and much of Portugal, we think our corner of it — Tomar and the Ribatejo — offers some of the country's most authentic, traditional experiences. Life here still follows the seasons. Every November we press our own olive oil with friends, some of the best we've ever tasted, and through the year we join the local festivals and traditional events that fill the towns around us. In summer there's live music in villages all over the area. What most guests fall for, though, is simpler: walking into the garden and choosing what you'll be eating twenty minutes later. For those who want to go deeper, we run syntropic agriculture courses, and friends offer guided tours of Tomar's castle and Convent of Christ — the last headquarters of the Knights Templar. We're an ideal base for exploring. Several towns, monuments and museums are a short drive away, the sea beaches about an hour, and Lake Zêzere just ten minutes for an afternoon swim. We sit right on the Camino de Santiago, with hiking and cycling trails close by. This is also horse country — home of the famous Lusitano horse and of Golegã, whose annual fair draws Lusitano lovers from around the world.
