Company info

Marília Reis Fonseca is the current owner of the historic beach guesthouse. Her granddaughter, Maria Joana, will be the sixth generation to take over the family business maintaining the peculiar tradition of the business being run by the female side of the family. In fact, the only man in the history of the guesthouse was José das Hortas, Marilia's great-uncle, who opened it and named it. Marilia loves to travel and to receive guests. She grew up spending her summer holidays at the guesthouse making her your perfect host.

Welcome to Pensão José das Hortas, one of the oldest guesthouses in Portugal. Opened in 1923 in Costa Nova by José Silva, also known as José das Hortas because he owned a vegetable garden nearby, to provide accommodation to the workers who worked building a channel to release a WWI German ship that ran aground on the beach. If you are looking for a vintage place to spend a unique holiday, Pensão José das Hortas is the perfect place to experience history, while relaxing at the beach, or just shopping at the local fish market.

The pension is located in the center of Costa Nova, right next to the Municipal Fish Market. It is a bustling area especially in the summer with restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and shops nearby. In front of the guesthouse you will find the beautiful Aveiro's estuary and the famous stripe houses bordering the Costa Nova's promenade. The village, and its wonderful beach with white sand dunes, it's located in the rear of Pensão José das Hortas.
