Returning to the front of the Misericórdia Church and following to the left, we find Rua da Rainha, in honour of Queen Maria II, who determined the elevation of Guimarães to a city on 22 June 1853. ‘I am pleased to elevate the Villa of Guimarães to the rank of City with the denomination of City of Guimarães, and I am pleased that in this capacity it will enjoy all the prerogatives, freedoms and franchises that rightfully belong to it.’ The Queen was welcomed at the ‘Porta da Vila’ by an enthusiastic popular demonstration. The then mayor handed her the keys to the town, from where she followed a procession towards the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Olive Tree, along Rua dos Mercadores (now Rua da Rainha D. Maria II). The old name of ‘Rua dos Mercadores’ (Merchants' Street) was due to the bustling trade that once existed there, including goldsmiths, tailors and others. The whole street is lined with beautiful buildings and houses with wrought iron balconies and granite façades that seem to have stood still in time. Further along, we see a beautiful building on the right - the Casa dos Lobos Machado, with a rocaille-style façade, profusely decorated with vigorous and dynamic motifs, beautifully embossed in the typical granite of the region, which contrasts with the whiteness of the walls. This building was built in the second half of the 18th century and was until recently the headquarters of the Guimarães Commercial and Industrial Association. In a kind of very narrow alleyway after the Casa dos Lobos Machado is the Capela do Anjo, or Chapel of St Crispim, founded in 1315 by two master shoemakers who had their trades in this street. Next to it, the Albergaria Hospital was founded, which welcomed the poor and sheltered pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. In 1786, the Brotherhood of S. Crispim and S. Crispiniano was created, which has maintained an old tradition to this day, serving an abundant Christmas dinner every year on Christmas Eve to the city'
