The area As a retreat from the rigours of modern life, Kalkan is little short of idyllic! Nestled around a sheltered natural harbour at the foot of the majestic Taurus Mountains, this unspoilt historic town overlooks a bay of breath-taking beauty. A thriving Greek fishing village called Kalamaki until the 1920s; Kalkan is now largely devoted to high-end tourism. Look out for Kalkan's charms in the compact old town including the picturesque harbour, shops, and various eateries including cafés, bars and fine dining restaurants. The town is well served by banks and supermarkets. There is a large Thursday market in town and a smaller local market in the neighbouring village of Akbel on a Sunday. The harbour area caters for all, including a small pebble beach, beach clubs (many of which can be reached by a frequent boat shuttle service); watersports clubs; and not forgetting the very popular past-time of a day at sea. If you wish to venture beyond Kalkan, a visit to Kas (20min drive) would be highly recommended or to Fethiye, which is very popular for shopping. The world-renowned Kaputas and Patara beaches and the Lycian ruins are both only a 10-minute drive away.
