This is a beautiful building and location. There is a lot of history to the Gable House. The hosts were kind enough to share that history with us over a fantasy breakfast. I highly recommend you try this place out.

Property info

The Gable House is a three-story Queen Anne Victorian brick building with a wooden wrap-around porch of ornate banisters and relief work. The house also features two balconies on the second floor. Four gables join the steep main roof along with an imposing turret on the third floor. The Gable House was built in 1892 by James and Eliza Schutt. Eliza Schutt owned the home until 1898, when it was sold to J.L. Rachofsky. The new owner, Rachofsky, operated a mercantile shop called The Famous. In 1913, The Famous caught fire, and the house was sold to its most illustrious owner, Dr. B.J. Ochsner. in 1937, the house was sold to Drs. Leo Lloyd and Christopher Martin, who continued its use as a hospital. In 1942, they sold the home to the County and it became the County’s first public hospital. In 1962, the County sold the home to JAME Corporation and in 1966 it was sold to one of the stockholders, Marvin Dale. In 1970, Dale sold the home to Jeffrey and Heather Bryson. Heather operated it as the Gable House Bed and Breakfast. Indeed, the Gable House flourished under the care and ownership of Ms. Bryson. The home and Bed & Breakfast is now owned by Charles Goodman and Tracie Trotter, continuing the stewardship of Heather, as Innkeepers, along with Tracie’s daughter Rubie. The Gable House strives to have a minimal footprint in our community. Our location provides walkability to the downtown Durango area to our guests. We use only reusable dishes and utensils for all meals and for guest use, providing no single use plastics. We compost all of our appropriate kitchen scraps, and we only offer daily linen service for special needs. We support reusable and sustainable initiatives throughout our community! We are passionate about supporting local businesses by serving their products. We believe patronizing local businesses strengthens our Durango Community.

Neighborhood info

The Gable House sits on a corner lot in the heart of historic Durango, a short walk to dining and retail shops on 2nd Avenue and Main Street. The Durango; Silverton Train Station is a short half mile walk from our front door. The picturesque tree-lined street and quiet neighborhood are all part of the charm and warmth of a true Bed and Breakfast.
