Company info

We love to share our mountain cottage with discerning guests. Emfuleni has been exquisitely furnished by Brian and Lyn Birkholtz for your enjoyment. We know that a couple of days in the Berg will relax and invigorate you so we want to make your experience as hassle free as possible. I (Basil) will facilitate your arrival, your stay and departure with all the information you need to settle right in and feel as if Emfuleni is your home from home. I am available 24/7 during your stay if you need any further assistance but mostly our guests just want to "do their own thing".

Property info

At Emfuleni you could never be bored. Whatever your taste, you will be well catered for. For those who just wish to relax, the peace and serenity of the Berg has been made specially for you. For the serious backpacker there are numerous one, two and three day hikes starting in the area. For the casual hiker there are two, four, and six hour hikes starting from Emfuleni. Emfuleni is just the place, when you need to dangle your feet in a fresh mountain stream or sip the clear, cool water. Maybe you just want to sit and watch your reflection in the quiet little pools formed off the main stream, or maybe you want to watch a leaf as it rushes by in its quest to find the end of the stream, very much like us, rushing to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Neighborhood info

Situated deep in the Drakensberg, in the centre of the Cathkin valley, you will find yourself surrounded by majestic peaks such as Champagne Castle, Cathkin Peak, Monks Cowl and the Sterkhorn. The "Grotto" is a natural cave formed by an overhanging rock which is beside a waterfall. The waterfall drops into a beautiful natural pool which is great for a swim, in summer. The hike starts at the river, directly in front of Emfuleni. The Fern Forest. This enchanting spot is well worth a visit. It is situated just west of the hotel lake on the slopes of the Little Berg. Allow an hour's walk each way. Van Damms Cascades. A good path leads around the Grotto and Ndema forest to the Cascades. Steilberg. Half a days hike to the top of the Steilberg with views of the Northern Berg. You can either take in Jacobs Ladder to the north or Hlatikulu Nek to the south. Other hikes. From Emfuleni it is a short drive to Monks Cowl Forestry Station. From there it is possible to hike to the top of the Little Berg, via Crystal Falls and the Sphinx.
