Our little cottage on Ironstone Farm was spectacular. The kitchen was basic but was stocked with everything we needed. We spent our time outside on the patio, in the hammock or the pool, braaiing and stargazing from the firepit. The perfect spot...

We were lucky enough to be there for the last super moon of 2025 and it was spectacular. We stayed for 2 nights, so the 2nd night was a sky full of stars viewed from around the firepit. Absolutely magical! And the beds were super comfy. Can't wait...

Flanked by the Camdeboo National Park, and located 12.5 km from historic Graaff-Reinet, Ironstone Cottage sits within game conservancy on working cattle farm. The farm is fully solar. Recently restored, it is perched on a promontory overlooking the entrance of a magnificent dolomite valley, and is an ideal base for walking, photography, mountain biking, etc. Fully self catering, 2 double beds each with en suite bathroom, aircon, fireplace, barbecue facilities. Linen & towels provided. Firepit, and plunge pool. Having your own vehicle is essential. The road is regularly graded, but corrugations persist. We strongly advise a 4x4 or at least a high clearance vehicle, just for your own convenience. Please note that while many saloon/low slung vehicles visit, this is at your own risk, most especially if it rains when the road can become very boggy and occasionally impassable. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AIRCONS ARE PROVIDED FOR COOLING THE HOUSES IN THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS BETWEEN OCTOBER AND APRIL, NOT FOR HEATING AS THE FARM IS ON SOLAR. Electric blankets, blankets, duvets and hot water bottles are provided and each house has a fireplace. The farm is offgrid, and using the aircons for heating drains the system during the short, winter days.
Restoring the farm and its historic buildings is an ongoing project with great reward in rehabilitating the veld, re-eastablishing the farmhouse gardens, farming cattle, reintroducing wildlife and all the while being part of a living, vibrant community in Graaff Reinet. It is with great enthusiasm that we offer guests from all over SA and many parts of the world to enjoy this peaceful escape. The cottage is self check in and we leave guests to enjoy their privacy, although we live on the farm and are available should you need us, or wish for guidance on farm trails etc
Broederstroom farm, where the cottage is located, is an historic, working cattle farm that is a member of a 70 000 ha conservancy and is flanked by National Park, private reserves and livestock farms. It is also part of the Cape Mountain Zebra Protected Environment. The farm is 12 km from Graaff-Reinet, the 6th oldest town in South Africa and one of the most beautiful. There is a strong Cape Dutch architectural influence and the wide streets are lined with jacaranda and flamboyant trees. There are charming restaurants, museums and cafes, antique shops, spas, a bookshop, deli, and other local businesses, as well as larger country-wide chains for clothing, grocery and equipment purchases, all of which are easy access for farm guests. A private vehicle is necessary for access to the farm, and ideally a 4x4. Having a mountain bike, running shoes or sturdy boots are also advisable, to better enjoy your experience on the property. Please come prepared for extremely hot days in summer and cold winter nights.
