Mudhouse Zululand offers private, off-grid treetop accommodation surrounded by nature. Each hut has its own plunge pool, open-plan sleeping and living area, outdoor spaces and beautiful views across the Zululand bush. The camping-style kitchen is equipped for simple self-catering and includes a fridge with a small freezer compartment. Guests can also enjoy a private outdoor shower, fire pit and braai area. The property runs entirely on solar power, so high-power appliances such as hairdryers, heaters, microwaves and toasters cannot be used. The accommodation is intentionally simple, comfortable and designed for guests who value privacy, nature and an experience that is a little different from a conventional lodge.

We are Martijn and Bernadette, originally from the Netherlands and now happily at home in Zululand. Our love of nature, sustainable living and unconventional building inspired us to create Mudhouse Zululand. We built our own off-grid earthbag home and later created the treetop huts so that we could share this remarkable place with others. We live on the property and are available when guests need assistance, while always respecting their privacy and independence. We enjoy welcoming adventurous travellers who appreciate wildlife, peaceful surroundings and a simpler way of living.

Mudhouse Zululand is situated within a private protected nature reserve near Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Giraffes, zebras and other African savannah animals roam freely through the reserve, and guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush from their own private hut. There are no lions, elephants, buffalo or rhinos on our side of the reserve. However, neighbouring wilderness areas across the river are home to lions and elephants, which can occasionally be heard in the distance. The area is peaceful and secluded, yet well positioned for exploring the wider Zululand region, including game reserves, coastal forests, beaches and other natural attractions. Restaurants and shops are available in the surrounding area, although guests should arrive with their essential groceries and supplies.
