The cottage was very nice. It is full of history being built around 1891. There are two large bedrooms each with a comfortable double bed, lounge, dining table with four chairs, kitchen with gas stove, small fridge, microwave and equipped with...

Only 15 min from Lambertsbay, 250 km from Cape Town. The Story of The Big Tree Cottage – Graafwater Nestled in the quiet village of Graafwater, under the generous shade of a magnificent old Wild Fig tree, stands The Big Tree Cottage — a building rich in history, character, and heart. Built in 1891, The Big Tree Cottage was never meant to be a home. In those early days, Graafwater had no municipal water or electricity. Life was simple and often challenging. The sturdy stone structure was originally built as a rainwater reservoir, carefully designed to collect and store precious water for the community. It was a lifeline in a dry and demanding landscape. As the years passed and Graafwater was blessed with municipal water, the reservoir’s purpose changed. The first owner transformed the building into one large outbuilding where his three sons were required to stay — a space filled, no doubt, with the laughter, discipline, and daily life of a growing family. Time continued to shape the cottage’s story. Over the decades, it served the community in many different ways — as municipal offices, as a bank, and even as a cozy coffee shop where locals gathered to share news and stories. Each chapter left its quiet mark on the walls. Watching over it all is the grand old Wild Fig tree, planted when the original house on the property was first built. Now more than a hundred years old, its wide branches stretch protectively above the cottage, offering cool shade in summer and a timeless sense of peace. The tree is not just part of the landscape — it is part of the cottage’s soul. Today, the current owners have lovingly transformed The Big Tree Cottage into a guest house. With only a few careful renovations, they have preserved its historic charm — the thick walls, the character-filled spaces, and the feeling that you are stepping into a piece of living history. Modern comforts blend gently with old-world character, creating a stay that is both comfortable and meaningful.
Making sure you enjoy the peaceful retreat in an old farm community.
