Tastefully decorated with an eclectic mix of African art and antique furniture. Sitting watching the stars from the splash pool was an absolute highlight. Lovely that the pool is attached to the front stoep. Uninterrupted views down the Touwsriver...

The quietness and solitude, and the vast open space was just what I needed! Ashley & Andre were amazing; attentive, yet respectful of my need for solitude. A very restful space - so good for the soul.

Celebrating 20 YEARS of Klein Karoo hospitality excellence, Wolverfontein Karoo Cottages continues to be the first choice for Route 62 travellers. Conveniently situated between Barrydale and Ladismith - far from the madding crowd - it’s the unparalleled access to nature, and exceptionally hospitality, which bring guests back year after year. Not only a birders paradise, it’s also great base for outdoor enthusiasts - mountain biking and hiking routes within walking distance - whilst self-drive game viewing is possible in neighbouring reserves. The heritage farm buildings at Wolverfontein, now converted into self-catering cottages, offer a blend of modern functionality and antique furnishings in breathtaking natural surroundings, each with their own private plunge pool. The fully equipped gas-cooker kitchens have been featured in award-winning cookbooks – namely Sally Andrew’s Tannie Maria’s Cookbook and Justine Bonello’s Cooked in the Karoo - although the generous outdoor braai areas are equally popular, with open fires under clear night skies. Sustainable solar power ensures lights remain on during load shedding, essential devices can charged, and Wi-Fi connectivity remains stable for those working remotely. Wolverfontein is the heart of the Klein Karoo. Open to experience
Life partners since 1994, Andre and Ashley purchased the abandoned Wolverfontein in 2002. Seeking an escape from the city, they set about completely restoring this historic property, to open their doors to guests in 2006. Andre is a keen MTB cyclist - he cycled from Cape Town to Nairobi in 1992 - whilst Ashley is a retired actor and published author. Well travelled adventurers - from Petra to Monument Valley to Angkor Wat - your hosts are not only excellent raconteurs, but also offer a personal hospitality service that is lauded in reviews.
The Touwsriver Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty, offering guests a myriad of opportunities for both rest and relaxation, but also for hiking and mountain biking too. With extraordinary access to some of the Karoo's most rugged terrain, guests at Wolverfontein are spoiled for choice. Day trips through the Agter Swartberg - including a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Seweweeksport - are as spectacular as the self drive game viewing on offer. Wolverfontein is cradled by premier private game and nature reserves. Guests seeking a cultural experience will find the historic towns of Ladismith and Amaliënstein most fascinating, but also railway enthusiasts, who can visit the ghost town of Plathuis - once a stop for the famous Makadas steam train - a mere 500 meters from Wolverfontein itself. With a easy drive to Barrydale, guests have a wide range of eateries and curiosity shops at hand, whilst the awe inspiring Tradouw Pass between Barrydale and Suurbraak is worth the extra mile. Don't forget the world famous Ronnie's Sex Shop, a must stop on any R62 itinerary. Wolverfontein is an excellent stop between Cape Town and the Addo Elephant National Park, the Coastal Garden Route, or Prince Albert via the Swartberg Pass. Route 62 is considered one of the worlds best road trips.
