Visit Midsummer Commons around the 5th of November, which is Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. This holiday commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The firework display in the fields of Midsummer Common is truly fantastic!

One of many of the green open spaces in Cambridge, which offer a respite to the constant busy roads all around. Try to walk a few of the commons and greens and rest awhile in the relative peace of the open spaces.

This a open space for strolling but likely doesn't merit a special trip if you are visiting Cambridge for a short time. If you are looking forward to getting away from the crowds, there is a cute pub along the river here (not sure the quality of the food). However, sitting in the grass requires looking where you are sitting since cattle are grazed on the common. Do not approach the cattle. They are generally pretty benign but if they get startled, their behavior can be unpredictable. Don't walk behind them because getting kicked by a hoof hurts. Also, don't mess with the swans. They can be very aggressive and injure people as well if they get cornered or provoked. There is a Michelin-star restaurant called Midsummer House on Midsummer Commons which would be an excellent (albeit) expensive reason to come here. If you have children, the best playground in Cambridge is on Jesus Green adjacent to the Midsummer commons. It has wonderful play areas for older children and for toddler/preschoolers.
