The cottage is one of three that share a plot.

The cottage is one of three that share a plot. The other two were occupied but at least the noise level was low after 9 pm. The unit is newer, very clean, cozy and comfortable. Yes, a tiny house of one room with a full bathroom. The water pressure is good and hot water too. The bed was comfortable and kitchen well stocked to preparer meals. The host was kind and communicative and explained everything accurately. We arrived and the gate at the road was closed. Someone coming to the property opened the gate for us and we met the host at the unit further down the access road. Also, the gate remote was tricky to use. There should be a better system for entering the property. I die not like the lack of privacy from the other units. They too close and even conversations carry from one unit to another.

We travelled to Puerto Tranquilo to kayak to the Marble Caves/Chapels—which I highly recommend! I only wish we had stayed longer so we could also visit Laguna San Rafael from there. We ended up doing the Laguna San Rafael glacier tour from Puerto Chacabuco instead, but the ferry journey felt too long for my liking—it was a 12‑hour round trip just to reach the glacier and return. There is a much closer access point from Puerto Tranquilo, and I would definitely choose that option next time.

I slept in Balmaceda the night before my departure from the airport the next morning. It is a town with nothing to see and no dependable resources other than the airport, whose facilities are available during limited hours, only. The auto rental in the airport is excellent, however. Europcar gave me the kind of car needed for safe travel in this isolated region.

The hiking was incredible.

The hiking was incredible. My favorite part was hiking up to the laguna Cerro Castillo. I had a bum knee, so my friends did the Horquetas route for three days. I met them on the third day going straight up the mountain. I think the Chilean park folks are still figuring out how to best manage visitors, but I was impressed with the amenities for hikers. Much better than the Argentine Patagonia side at El Chaltan. (we did that last year) Make sure you bring bug spray. There are a lot of horse flies on the way up. I used some strong deet and it kept them away. We only tried one restaurant in town and it was pretty good. (La Querencia) There is a new gas station that is clean and they sell real diet cokes not coke zero. ;) Getting around the area is easy, but you might want to rent a 4x4. I took one day and went to the marble caves. It is about 90 miles south on a dirt road! Well worth it if you have the time. You also need a 4x4 to get to the trailhead to do the laguna route. If you don't have it, you have to park quite a ways a way and hike in. That lot also charges a fee, the trailhead lot does not.

Coihaique is a town of about 60k, so not small, but quaint and not touristy at all. Plenty of good local eateries, grocery stores and whatever else you may need. Lovely rolling hills and the Andes mountains in the distance. Interesting geography and history of the area. We only stayed one night but wish we would've stayed a bit longer to see more.

There are very few excursions available in Puerto Rio Tranquilo - especially with the closure of the Exploradores Glacier. I would recommend to stay in Puerto Guadal instead which is 1 hour away. Easier to cover the area around (Chile Chico, Cochrane, Patagonia National Park) and even to come to Rio Tranquilo as needed (which is 1 hour drive away).

Fantastic views, stylish lodge, attentive staff.

Fantastic views, stylish lodge, attentive staff. Beautiful location surrounded by nature, views of valleys and mountains. The food was not exceptional but well prepared. The Lodge itself is well designed in the farmhouse country-side kind of style, huge windows, nice furniture, and it feels like a private retreat rather than a hotel. The manager was exceptional- he was at 5 different places at the same time, finding time to greet all guests, offer meals and services and attention. I only think English as an international language of communication would be desired: we could have used a locals' advice on the Park and the area as our information was rather limited.

A great place by the sea, among fiords.

A great place by the sea, among fiords. Great to start an adventure to Laguna San Rafael glaciers or Puyuhuapi thermae across the beautiful Aysén chanels. The bay itself might be disappointing for nature lovers. Being a fisheries base and port, the coastline is not as clean as it should.

Coyhaique is a great jump off point to travel the Carretera...

Coyhaique is a great jump off point to travel the Carretera Austral. We flew into Balmaceda airport, rented a car and then stayed the night in Coyhaique. Generally car rentals are round trip-no one way drop off, so having a central point to return to is key. Get comprehensive insurance! Many sections of the Carretara are gravel/ all weather roads with lots of bumps, pot holes, etc. We needed to make a claim for a dent on this leg of the trip. Although not essential 4 wheel drive for some sections was useful for stability on the road. Coyhaique has lots of grocery stores and specialty shops for getting provisions. We drove north for several days as far as Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda. Then headed back to Coyhaique stayed the night and headed south for a number of days as far as Puerto Bertrand. Then back to Coyhaique stayed another night and to Balmaceda airport the following day. (The overnight stays were necessary because the drives took many hours.)
