It’s cozy and right in front of the beach. They have a restaurant with drinks and a decent menu with some specials, which luckily for us was lobster when we arrived. Big, fat, fresh lobster. Staff is kind and the rooms are super comfortable and well designed.

Mario is a nice eco-friendly resort. I first booked it because it's beach front and not far from the airport (20 minutes drive), so not expecting much, and it turns out to be a surprise: spacious, with miles of beach with clean white sand; room is beautiful but hard to photograph, so it's a lot nicer than the posted photos; staff is very professional and speaks perfect English; food and service are both great (especially the grilled chicken), and after staying in various places in Sumba for over a week now, I can say that Mario serves the best food with most reasonable price; also Starlink is now available in Sumba so internet is reliable. By being the first resort set up in Sumba, everything holds up very well, nothing fancy but very very comfortable, I certainly can feel a mood lift after our first night there.

The hotel is relatively new and modern. We had a pool suite and it was very nice, though a bit small by Indonesia luxury hotel standards. The staff is friendly. The hotel provides good value for the price.

Such a kind welcome from the staff. Simple and clean, great hot shower, no luxury but you don't pay for that. This is located in a study center for local culture and in a beautiful setting.

A Memorable One-Night Escape at Kambaniru Beach Hotel & Resort I stayed one night at Kambaniru Beach Hotel & Resort, Waingapu – East Sumba, and it was truly a delightful experience that left a lasting impression. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed by the team. The reception staff were professional and friendly, the room attendant was attentive, and the restaurant staff consistently showed genuine hospitality. Their warmth and sincerity made the stay feel personal and comfortable. The room was clean, well-maintained, and inviting, offering the perfect place to relax. In the evening, the pool area came alive with a vibrant atmosphere. There was an event taking place with many guests, creating an energetic yet enjoyable vibe. The pool activities truly felt like the heart of the resort—full of life and positive energy. I also appreciated the variety of activities available, such as horse riding and cycling, which added a unique charm and allowed guests to enjoy the natural beauty of Sumba in an active way. At night, I treated myself to a spa experience within the resort, which was incredibly relaxing and the perfect way to end the day after a lively evening. Although my stay was short, it was deeply satisfying. Kambaniru Beach Hotel & Resort offers a wonderful combination of comfort, vibrant atmosphere, and heartfelt service. I had to leave, but I will certainly return on my next visit. Highly recommended for anyone visiting East Sumba and looking for a resort with soul, warmth, and memorable experiences.

What a wonderful destination. This was one of the highlights of our time in Indonesia. The hotel is gorgeous and the villas are large, cozy, nicely designed, with the ocean waves, creating a nice atmosphere. A nice terrace outside where we opted to have breakfast every morning. We used the private pool in our villa every day. We did not want to leave the room to explore the island at times. The staff in particular were incredible and they did their best to make us feel welcome and taken care of. Very avaible via Whatsapp for anything we needed. Always with a smile. It will stay with me for a long time. Their breakfast and dining in particular were a highlight :)

This place is not geared for tourism .

This place is not geared for tourism . If your young and adventurest. Yes hire a bike and enjoy. The roads are in good condition and most attractions are 1 to 2 hours from town. People are friendly and helpful . English language is a problem here. Beautiful beaches and scenery. Go for it.

Different place, different experience. Not every place is a big smoke. One need to have an open mind. Waikabubak is for ( for us ) relaxing and enjoying nature. Love the mountains and forests all the way. And The Beautiful Ocean.I love not having TV for 4 days. I just watch the superb waves from our villas verandah at ThreeQueen Villas.

We knew that the resort is somewhat isolated so and that we had to use their facilities, but the isolation could not be seen as a disadvantage. If you consider how much poverty there is on Sumba, most resorts are pure luxury compared to how the local population lives. If you don't mind to just enjoy the basics in life and have no desire to be entertained like they do in Bali, Sumba is a very good destination.

Waikabubak as a town is a non-descript typical provincial Indo town, with little accommodation and only one decent restaurant (great prices, great local food, cold Bintangs at D'SUmba Ate Waikabubak). There are few homestays and poor hotels. There are a couple of interesting Art Shops selling genuine antiques and local artifacts. There is one tourist shop selling local ikats mainly but at vastly inflated prices. The good things are all the traditional villages usually perched on local hilltops, including the touristy Prai Ijing (most of the houses now replaced by traditional LOOKING concrete rumah adats, only 1 year ago most were wooden structures) and then some great real untouristy places (e.g. prairame, kampung tarung). Also good access to waterfalls Lapopu and Matayangu. I wouldnt stay here for the town intself (in fact I would avoid it for that reason), but it is a great jumping off point for nearby attractions.

Go to Kampung Tarung, best ancestral village experience in Indonesia. Way WAY better than Rattenggaro! Authentic, free, no one is pushy about the stuff they sell, and you feel welcomed. Biggest highlight of Waikabubak!
