Location, beautiful facilities, superb breakfast, shuttle service to the city, comfortable bed, spa, comfortable and elegant common areas but above all the kindness of the staff. FAQs about hotels in Umbria

Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music

One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.

The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.

Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.

Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.

To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

This place is perfect! Easy access to highway and close to Perugia, Assisi, Spello, and Spoletto. It is situated in the middle of an olive groove. The room was quiet, super clean, with good bathroom, and instant hot water. The staff were pleasant and accommodating. We stayed here 3 nights and breakfast every morning was a good assortment of fruit, baked goods, plus meats and cheeses. Also, some excellent cappuccino. We dined here every evening and the food was delicious. The menu offered several choices of pasta and beef or lamb. All the food appeared to be locally sourced and was extremely fresh! The wine list was inclusive of local and regional red and white wines….if this place is available, book it NOW…..We will be back!!

Beautiful place - cannot recommend enough! The views of Todi and the surrounding areas were breathtaking. We stayed just two nights and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. Our room was beautiful - nice and big with nice windows. Dinner was great, breakfast was fine. We also did the wine tasting and ended up ordering a few cases of their wine. We will definitely be back and have recommended it to everyone we talk to! We've been to Tuscany many times and but are now Umbria fans!

Quaint little town surrounded by picturesque landscapes of surrounding cities and vineyards within the valley! The city is quite unique with beautiful four churches with strong significance. The city is house to a lot of local craft and small business! A great spot for going for wine tasting experience or similar for truffle hunt and more. The town and cathedral are very beautiful. Plenty of quaint shops, bars and eateries. Streets are cobbled and up and down hills, some in the surrounding area are quite steep. Mostly any age group would enjoy a visit. The Funicular was closed for maintenance so the only way to travel down from the town was by bus or taxi. Natives are very friendly.

A quiet Umbrian hill town, not over run with tourists, at least it wasn't in April. The historic center is very, very hilly. I love wandering and walking for miles exploring but the steep hills here made it less enjoyable and more exhausting to wander. The escalators, elevators and moving walkways do help with that effort. So get familiar with them to make the day exploring easier.

Breakfast by the lake or in the old town is great and nobody rushes you. The insects on the lake when we went on a boat trip were not so great. Dont worry though, they don't bite and they are only ON the lake,, not on the shore. The water is shallow and the beach area is lovely, although a bit tricky to find - it's safe, sandy, warm and there are plenty of bars, cafes and gelato !

Lovely place to visit, very interesting and easily exceeded my expectations. Must not miss Piazza Grande, Palazzo dei Consoli, Colle Eletto Cable car, Basilica St. Ubaldo, Bargello Fountain. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out but booking is recommended. We ate at Il Bargello, typical Umbrian food or pizza is available and they also offer a very reasonably priced tourist menu at lunch time. Plenty of places to visit, lovely walk up to Mount Ingino or you can go by cable car which was another experience in itself. But even just wandering around the lovely streets is pleasant. In my opinion you need a couple of days at least to see and do everything .

Our stay coincided with a boat race festival held on the last Sunday in July, however it was a week long festival and there was always something going on from late afternoon until about 10.30pm. There are many Café/bars and restaurants along the lakeside promenade varying in price and menus. This is a traditional Italian family resort, you will not find any loud bars or late night clubs. Some basic Italian would be a great advantage however each establishment had at least one person that could speak and understand English. The area around Lake Trasimeno is stunning and full of History, each lakeside village has a story to tell.

We had Montefalco on our 10 days travel through Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany mostly because of the wines produced in the area. They did not disappoint, and the town itself was certainly worth a visit for those who enjoy the hill town environment and great food and drink. We traveled in November, and were happy that crowds were not a problem. It was cool but not too cold, and we did not need a reservation for dinner. As a bonus, we got to see the pope on his travel there- joined a happy group of residents on the sidewalk waiting to see him. We will be learning Italian for the next trip but found that residents were happy to work with us to help us make ourselves understood.

I have visited Foligno many times over a number of years.

I have visited Foligno many times over a number of years. Yes, the suburbs are depressing and yes, it is very easy to get lost in a car but the Trinci is a marvellous and very beautiful museum, the cathedral has an exquisite facade and there is a lot of high class shopping to be done. Above all, it is full of little alleyways, unexpected piazze and an increasing number of good reastaurants. There is also the biannual jousting competition which I haven't seen but comes highly recommended. It is a Marmite city, even among Italians, but my advice is give it a go before it becomes discovered. Two days is sufficient.

The old part of town is nice, and has a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and nightlife to choose from. It is worth a visit, but you shouldn’t expect Terni to have the same historical splendour that many other old Italian towns/cities have. It is an industrial city, and it reflects that more than other towns. I happen to be there at the start of the San Valentino festival, so was able to enjoy a passeggiata through the lit up streets.
