"I went to Kushiro because I love When Marnie Was There, a Ghibli’s animation, and the Mashland from Where the Crawdads Sing. I visited Lake Toro and Hosooka Viewpoint. Those two places are now dear to my heart. While I was on the trail to Toro Sarurun Observatory, I saw dears, falcons(?) and a Japanese crane! I’d recommend to visit on weekdays if you could. It was so quiet and peaceful :) The Kushiro town itself had its own charm too! Just in the city, there were 2 big art galleries and the Kushiro City Museum that was worth visiting. Clearly, there are more of Kushiro to explore. I went there and I’m in love the place. It’d be nice if the same happens to you too!"

I love the proximity to the river, as i am fishing guide that comes here several times a year with my clients and family. We loved the onsen facility and the free ice cream at the end is a fantastic little treat.

MORITA. We have encountered some difficulties with our car, and Morita was SO helpful. She went above and beyond to make sure we have a pleasant stay. She made sure we are making the most out of the area, that everything is easy and nice, and thought of things we didn't even had in mind. She is a blessing.

Probably the largest room we had throughout our trip in Japan. This was a traditional Japanese style room with tatami mats, a low table and floor seating as well as western-style table and chair. It also has a fridge and an electric kettle. Free bicycle rental was amazing and we used their bikes to explore the shores of lake Kussharo. Staff are excellent and speak English very well. The hotel also has a public onsen that is open 24 h (you get a yukata, slippers, and towels in your room), a small souvenir shop, some games etc. Overall may appear a bit outdated, but the level of comfort is high. You can also order breakfast. Walking distance to the JR Mashu Station (about 1 km) with connections to Kushiro. Public transportation here is somewhat limited, but we managed: bus/train to Kawayu Onsen to see Mt. Io, bus to Lake Mashu 1st observatory + hike to Mt. Mashu, then return by hitchhiking, Wakoto Peninsula and Kotan Onsen by bike.

Kushiro is a compact city.

Kushiro is a compact city. When I was there in February 2024 the city was fairly quiet. Kushiro is a good place to stay if you are interested in seeing the Red crowned-cranes (Tancho). The Akan International Crane Center is just over an hour away by public bus. It's also possible to travel to the wetlands and the many lakes in the area. The Kushiro City Museum is very good with displays of the natural history, geology and Tancho. There are also wonderful sunsets that can be seen in various parts of the city.

The average stay at Akankohan is 1-2 nights.

The average stay at Akankohan is 1-2 nights. We stayed a week as we really wanted to immerse ourselves in Ainu culture and learn about a new area of Japan. The town was VERY quiet, although there was good occupancy in the 3 hotels we stayed at. We enjoyed meeting the people in stores and hotels and talking to the craftspeople in particular. We were able to get around easily on foot, no need for rental car. There was a shuttle bus service at La Vista Hotel and a public bus that we utitilised a few times. The Crane Park is an hour by public bus as well. We decided to cancel our last night in Kushiro and stay the extra night at Lake Akan. This worked out perfectly as it is just as easy getting to the Airport from Lake Akan as it is from Kushiro. If you are interested in art, crafts, nature and the Ainu people, this is a very special part of Japan to visit.

This time I visited Nemuro in late February for birdwatching purpose. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad, with strong winds and heavy clouds, nevertheless I managed to see some local birds and other animals in Meiji park and other places around the city. As for food, I'd recommend Ekimae Sapporo Ramen restaurant (駅前札幌ラーメン), the noodles were delicious, and I liked the place. I'll definitely come to Nemuro again, and I hope the weather will be better next time.

Rausu is a beautiful little gem on the east coast of Hokkaido. Small fishing town with amazing seafood, great hiking access to Shiretoko and incredible wildlife with orca whales and minke whales swimming close close by in the summer time. We saw lots of whales on our boat tour with baby orcas and a rare white orca being the highlights of the boat tour. People in Rausu were lovely and welcoming which makes it very easy to relax in the town. The seafood here is some of the best I’ve ever had. Restaurants serve amazing seasonal catches with a small market selling seafood caught that day. Would highly recommend Rausu to anyone visiting Hokkaido and would say if you want to hike stay 4-7 days but if you’re just coming for the whales stay 2-3 days. Best accessed via car but we got the bus from Sapporo to Kushiro and then from Kushiro to Rausu and still had an amazing time.

I love the city.

I love the city. You must spent at least 2 days to try their foods here. You must visit "Washow Ichiba" and buy dried seefood such as dried hotate, hotate himo, etc. Try "Senbousi" oyster which was biggest oyster in my life. Kushiro is also great for sight seeing. Kushiro is a good base camp to travel the east part of Hokkaido. Renting a car and drive to nearby cities, such as Akkesi, Nemuro, Akan, Mashu and many others. I am really sad that the population here is decreasing and they economy is going down. I will revisit here optern to cheer up people here and their life style.

Terrible experience at Crystal room. Room 348, actual room is not as the picture provided, it’s worse. The toilet looks as 30 years ago facilities, the bed squeezing all night. Roof and wall paper has stain. It’s pity with such a Great Lake view, yet bad memory left.

It was much less developed than the Shari/Utoro (=the other) side fo the peninsula, and fewer tourism spot existed, but that made the whole area attractive. I enjoyed the pure nature - geyser, orca watching cruise, and looking at the sea, with very few other tourists along.

Kushiro is nice and cool in the summer.

Kushiro is nice and cool in the summer. The city is not in good financial condition though based on the number of rundown buildings that have been abandoned, many of them on the main street Kitadori. Even the entertainment district - adjacent to the hotel has both many izakaya restaurants as well as shuttered businesses including department stores. I think it is the result of the bursting of the bubble economy way back when. The city overbuilt but there are many cities in Japan that did the same including Otaru which is also on the decline. I hope both cities recover. The Kushiro Library (5 years old) though is fabulous, one of the best libraries I've been in. And the annual festival in August was very good to see including the fireworks.

Onsen was very good and available in 3 locations.

Onsen was very good and available in 3 locations. On the Ground Floor & 8th Floor of the main building as well as on the 3rd Floor of the adjacent wing. Onsen on the Ground Floor of the main building is by far the best followed by the 8th Floor. Not recommended to use the onsen on the adjacent wing as it's small and mainly for the hotel customers that stay next door as there were 3 hotels that are interconnected. Food was pretty good as the hotel is inclusive of both breakfast & dinner. Location is pretty far if relying on public transportation. it takes approximately 6 hours by train from Sapporo To Kushiro and another approximately 2 hours by bus from Kushiro to the hotel. Be prepared for a full day of travel if using public transportation. Renting a car from New Chitose Airport will definitely save a lot of traveling time as it only takes approximately 4 hours from the airport to the hotel by car.
