We enjoyed a lot the huge rooms (compared to other hotels in Japan), the size of the bed and the good quality of the mattress & pillows, the nice decoration, the friendly and English speaking staff, the free parking lot, the pleasant rest area to gather with the family, the great location in Odai. Our stay at Fairfield by Marriott was incredible. The hotel was lovely, and our room was beautiful and so comfy. We booked for 2 nights but decided to extend for 1 more as it was in the perfect area for places we planned to visit, and again, it was just so comfy. The staff were so friendly, especially Enomoto, who helped us and was very kind. We would definitely stay here again the next time we’re in Mie!

The room is spacious with bright interior lightings. Other facilities are more than adequate as a professional business hotel. You can enjoy the view of the Ise city and the railway towards Tsu/Toba if you can get a room in higher floors, which gives you the unique Japanese vibe. Shuttle service to Iseshi station is provided every 20 minutes during the day. You can take advantage of that to continue the journey either by train or bus at the station.

I first stayed at this property 15 years ago, so wanted to stay here again on my anniversary trip to Toba. This time, I took advantage of the hotel shuttle that picks guests up from the station and transports you up the hill to the hotel. Also, the first time I stayed here in 2011, I didn’t know about the neighboring ryokan run by the hotel that features a hot Spring hotel guests can use. There are two different hot springs that use Mikimoto pearl products that make your skin feel fantastic! And because it was winter, they were doing marshmallow toasting in the lobby. I love that the rooms have a table and chairs overlooking the bay, it’s a perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine or sake at the end of the day. Breakfast buffet had ample selections, although some of the items weren’t hot (this was towards the end of the service). Outstanding customer service.

Ise has 2 of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan, a recreated historical shopping street, Okage-Yokocho, and an original old warehouse neighborhood, Kawasaki-cho. The bus system makes it easy to travel around the city. There are also many rental e-bike stations around the city. Many shops and hotels around the main tourist areas speak English if needed, and I have found the public-facing staff to be very friendly in general.

Our ryokan was fabulous, and Toba offers many opportunities for day trips including to nearby islands, towns, and visiting the Ama women deep sea divers and experiencing a litte of their traditional cultural heritage. We stayed 4 nights and could have easily stayed longer. The place is slow, sea food so fresh, and the people extremely friendly.

Tsu is actually my 2nd least favourite city in Japan.

Tsu is actually my 2nd least favourite city in Japan. I was only staying there because it was the only place I could get a hotel for my trip in the Ise area. Despite not being a huge city, it is quite unfriendly to pedestrians and there's honestly not too much to enjoy in the city as a tourist. The busses do work really well and are unlikely to get stuck in traffic because of how unnecessarily wide (4 lanes) the main road is. Trains in Mie in general are a little difficult to understand as a tourist (even as one that speaks and reads Japanese quite well) so you need to be careful when relying on Google Maps and you're probably best off just going to a MAIN station (like Tsu Station) and making your decision when you get there. The Yuki Shrine that I went to years ago was nice and there's a decent art museum if you like that kind of thing, but neither of these things are terribly unique. I have however had the best burger of my life in this city (at a place called Both Rich) and the hotels I have stayed in this city have been good and good value for money too.

Shima is more rural Japan, and there is many nice scenerie.. There is even very nice surf beach (Kou Shirahama), where i have visited many times. Best in summer/autumn for surfing, but beatiful all year round.. You can rent boards for example from Le Ba Surf. Pearl road is good to drive with scenic spots and Anori and Daio has few lighthouses with stunning views. Also if you like pearls, there is a lot of pearl industey around and you can buy pearl jewelries etc. You absolutely need a car to get around properly, it is rural, and access to most places is just by car.

We didn’t have time to explore Kameyama as we were involved in support races at Suzuka , but we noticed a bakery nearby, a grocery store next door and many historical sites and shrines worth a visit. We also dropped by Nakaya toys!!! It is an amazing toy shop with toys from the 80s through current day . Amoce’ italian restaurant was fantastic, a 5 minute drive away- their pizza Bismarck was better than the ones we tried in Milan! The chef was trained in Italy- Amoce is a must visit if you’re ever in Kameyama.

The Onigajo walkway along the cliff is definitely an experience shouldn't be missed if you're in the area. It's free to walk along that walkway and you can tell a lot of love and care had been put into the maintenance of of the walkway so it's safe for people to experience the walkway. Since the walkway is along the cliff, it's not suitable for any faint hearted or people with disability.

Compared to bigger cities in Japan, Ise is very car-oriented and the trains and buses are rather infrequent. So knowing when the buses are coming and also planning to arrive early so you don't have to wait for multiple cycles of the bus is helpful. Most people who visit Ise are Japanese as it's a place with significance to Shinto, the native religion of Japan. I'm not Japanese but I have studied Japanese and can speak, understand, and read Japanese okay, but if I couldn't I would've had a lot of trouble getting around as there's very little English written. Otherwise, I felt that the town was very nice, I walked along the beach on the coast with the Married Rocks, and it was a beautiful view.

Toba was our base for our 4-day trip in Ise.

Toba was our base for our 4-day trip in Ise. We chose Toba because it seemed "central" enough to the places we wanted to visit, such as Ise Jingu Geku and Naiku, Meoto Iwa, Mikimoto Pearl Island, and Yokoyama Observatory. The hotel we stayed at provided shuttle service to the Toba Station, which kind of sealed the deal. We did not drive, so we had to take the local train, bus and sometimes a taxi, but it was all good. Getting around was very easy. We purchased the Kintetsu rail 5-day pass, which made travelling convenient. There were not many international tourists, which made the experience feel local.
